Dear MSH Members and Friends,

This communication is not news to most of you. As matter of fact, it is about a subject that everyone has watched on TV, read on newspaper, heard on the radio, from friends, from family members, or have experienced first hand.

Cancer is a disease that can affect anybody and at any age. The disease can affect almost any organ in the human body; it is disabilitating and its cure is far from affordable for the average Moroccan.  In the absence of an adequate healthcare, this despicable disease has and continues to ruin families both emotionally and financially.

Likely, there are professional organizations that are built around the purpose of reducing both the emotional and especially the financial burden on the patients and their loved ones.  One such organization that comes to the aid of Moroccans with cancer is AMINO Association des Amis de l'Institut National d'Oncologie.

Since its inception in 1998, AMINO has helped tens of thousands of Moroccans bear the ordeal of the treatment by taking charge of all or parts of the medical fees including consultation, laboratory tests, radiology, and drug fees.  For a cost of 8 million dirhams, the association has built a 3400 m2 hosting facility for patients and their close relatives that travel from different parts of Morocco to seek treatment in Sidi Mohammed Ben Abdellah oncology hospital in Rabat.  The professional personnel in this facility help triage patients and accompany them to their doctors' visit among other things.  The association has also sponsored a chemotherapy unit, a waiting room and a number of medical equipment in the above said and other hospitals.

An estimated 35.000 to 40.000 new cases of cancer are discovered in Morocco each year of which 85% are unable to bear the cost of treatment which can soar past 60.000 dirhams per patient.  Without help from private donations and associations like AMINO, many loved ones will perish by cancer.

The Moroccan Society of Houston is asking all Moroccans and friends of Morocco to donate and support their fellow and needy Moroccans.  Your help is needed back home and this is a call for you to act and donate generously.  MSH urges you to make a pledge and consider donating Zakat Al-Fitr to this noble cause to help reduce the suffering of a child, mother, father, or a friend.
