Stop making her a martyr

Yassine

Nadia Yassine - a Moroccan far right activist woman - is addicted to publicity, especially in the international press. That’s been her trade in life. This articulate fundamentalist (and her father before her) advocates in favor of hard core Islamic law to replace Morocco’s secular political system and social values. She is a manipulator of the first order and the Moroccan government ought to know better than to give more ammunitions to her posturing.

She is now being prosecuted for uttering her wish to see Morocco become a republic. That’s playing into her hands and just plain old stupid. It makes a mockery of Morocco’s attempts at political reform towards democratic principles , including freedom of speech.
Nadia Yassine’s (and her group’s) rhethoric is vacuous and her methods manipulative and deceptive. Despite their claims, she and her followers seek power rather than “justice and good deeds”. She and her followers do not seek consensus or the middle road. They seek to impose their vision of a political Islam on the Moroccan society, without regard for opposing views, expressing contempt and moral oppobrium on Moroccan secularists. Let’s be real, they can’t stand the real freedoms and principles of equity and justice for which Moroccans - men and women - have sacrificed so much over the years.
Still - demagogues such as Nadia Yassine - should be allowed to speak. She is entitled to her opionion and I, for one, would rather see her being taken on by the numerous, amazing secularist women and men of Morocco who do not, for a minute, buy into her manipulations. Prosecuting her for her views gives her a platform she doesn’t deserve.
