Moroccan Community celebrates Obama win along with America Frenzied celebration broke out throughout the country, following the historic win by Barak Obama, the first African American President of the country.
in one swoop, America became the country where everything is possible, an example to the world and it made possible a chance to repair the damage done by President Bush two terms in office.
Barak Obama and the wave of victorious democrats candidates that won will try to revise, correct or repeal some of the most egregious laws that have been passed under the Bush Administration and Republican Congress, such as Patriot Act and others.
The New administration will hopefully usher in a new, and warmer relations with Morocco, Africa and the rest of the third world... 0 0

Moroccan Female Teen Soccer Players: Soccer Playing and Life Skills Ten Moroccan girls and their two female coaches participated in a Sports Visitors program for the office of SportUnited, a program organized by US Dept of States Bureau of Educational and Cultural Affairs.
The group spent twelve days in the U.S. improving their soccer skills, learning to be leaders, and meeting with their American contemporaries.
Their fast paced program included five soccer clinics organized by U.S. Mens National Team coach Jay Miller and Washington Freedoms Clive Watson. Jay Miller and former Womens National Team Member, Lorrie Fair, served as Sports Envoys to Morocco last spring. Mr. Miller jumped at the chance to continue to work with the Moroccan girls.
Another highlight for the group was the opportunity to meet and speak with girls their own age. From practicing with the D.C. Stoddert U-15 travel team and Arlington U-15 recreation team to meeting with a group of 15 and 16 year old International Baccalaureate (IB) Diploma female students at Banneker. The group was engaged in a variety of lively discussions. Many of the young Moroccan girls were stunned by the diversity of the people they met and pleased to see Muslims accepted everywhere as equals.
Beyond the soccer clinics and meetings, the group had a range of cultural experiences that included visiting Mt. Vernon, touring the U.S. Capitol and the Mall as well as going to see the National Aquarium Baltimore. The group also attended a World Cup qualifier between the U.S. Mens National Team and Cuba as well as a match between the University of Maryland and University of Virginia Womens teams.
Coach Halima Berrad remarked the values that Americans cherish are the same ones that my religion teaches.
A reception and a fundraiser was hosted by the Washington Moroccan Club. Community members welcomed the Moroccan Soccer teens and presented them with a lot of encouragements and small gifts.

Moroccan American Youth Art Contest Seeks the White House It is afternoon and I am at the Mclean Community Center in VA to attend an event. As soon as I set a foot in the room, I am already exchanging hugs with faces I had not seen for months if not years, and hellos with individuals I meet for the first time. In the middle of the room, there are tables lined up with about 32 kids, age ranging from 2 to 14 years old, who are drawing with crayons. Some of them are demanding that their parents check on their work for approval while others are adamant that their parents do not even peek at their crafts. MBTV was busy interviewing kids and capturing these moments. On the far left corner of the room, there is a table with juices, water, and various types of cookies.
On the wall to my right, I can see Moroccan and American flags and some posters hanging. As the afternoon progressed, I got the chance to mingle with few parents who were spread out in various small groups. Topics varied from discussing which airline to take this summer to travel to Morocco, to sharing information on various local schools kids attend, to the fast rate at which kids grow. It was pleasant to also hear parents compare and contrast the habits and ways of their children.
Such was the setting at the second Youth Art Contest, part of My Morocco event series. This particular event was chaired by Mrs. Annalissa Essaadi, and the theme this time around was "Welcome the Obama Family to the White House." The aim was to bring community members and their families together yet again and to press on with the Obama to Speak in Morocco Campaign said Hassan Samerhouni. who is proving to be the quintessence of persistence in this campaign.
After all these aspiring young Picassos had completed their pieces, they were given the opportunity to talk about their works of art. Then, they each received an honorary certificate in recognition for their participation and as a token of encouragement. Speaking of certificates, Art supplies, certificates, and snacks and refreshments were sponsored by WMC members. Speaking of WMC members, Abdessamad Nhairy and Aicha Bensaid were instrumental in making this event a success.
Organizers are planning to select three to four paintings and organize a trip to the White House with these kids to present the paintings to the Obama family. Since we live in a land where anything is possible, attempts at making it official by presenting the selected works to Malia and Sasha Obama in person are underway. It would be quite a tail to tell for these kids if this were to materialize. And who knows, may be this will inspire some of them to want to seek the presidency some day!

The Moroccan Ambassador spoke in front of a business audience at the Irvine Chamber of Commerce in Orange County, CA. He spoke about investment opportunities in Morocco, the advantageous conditions provided to foreign investors. He fielded questions from the audience on renewable energies in morocco, on investment in the health sector. The emergence of retirement facilities for northern Europeans in morocco elicited a great interest, followed by related questions on necessary services to western retirees that move to Morocco.
The trip was organized and coordinated by Mr. Adil Naji of Arabesque, Inc., The chamber of commerce event was sponsored by FTR International, a global contracting and engineering firm. The media coverage was provided by M. Saout of MoroccoBoard.

There were inquiries relating to import/export issues and the need for more transparent and readily available information to potential importers and exporters, others bemoaned the lack of transportation options between Morocco and the US, the sole Royal Air Maroc flight between NY and Casablanca is a drop in the water and is of no help to both Moroccan Americans or potential visitors. There were requests for help to entice American airline companies to open up new routes to Morocco. Mr. Adil Naji of Arabesque, Inc., spoke extensively on the benefit of MAC (the Moroccan American Coalition) that is currently being organized and its potential for streamlining communication among various Moroccan American Communities around the country
The trip ended with a visit to the film set at universal studios in Hollywood to watch a shoot of the popular CSI television series. Moroccan American Author, Laila Lalami, on Her Second Novel : Secret Son At her reading, organized by Algonquin Books, Washington Moroccan Club and Border Books, in Washington DC, Moroccan American Author, Laila Lalami, described the central character of her second novel in English, "Secret Son", as a poor young man in contemporary Morocco, his aspirations of education and escape from the Casablanca Slum where he lives with his mother, the revelation that his father is still alive and doing well and his sub-sequential adventures.
In a lively Q&A session following her presentation, She refused to be seen as anything but a novelist, "I am not pretending to know my native country Morocco any more than anyone else". She said that she does not necessarily aim to do social criticism, or write about any particular issue, her main focus as a novelist, is to write a story as best I can. And since her characters live in Moroccan society, that society's characteristics, contradictions and shortcomings are laid bare to the reader to ponder.
What emerged from her second book, Secret Son, is ambiguity, and that, for Laila Lalami, is normal providing her upbringing, education, experience both here in the States and in Morocco.
In an interview with MoroccoBoard TV, Laila Lalami took issue with her comparisons to Moroccan Writer Tahar Ben Jelloun, as the marquee Moroccan author in English. She said that she couldnt start believing all the hype that is being written out there. "It is dangerous for an author to do that".
She also confessed that she has been heartened by the outpouring support from the Moroccan American Community both online and at her book tour throughout the country.

Wydad of Washington - WAC - Therill Cup Champions Washington Athletic Club (WAC) won Washington International Soccer League's
(WISL) Terrill cup for the second time with a decisive 4 - 0 win. WAC's supporters who managed to attend were indeed entertainment. The game overall was exciting and fun. First-half was even with very few chances
created by both teams. The first half ended in a 0-0 draw. The second-half, however, was a complete different story; a halftime talk of the
coaching staff with the players saw them morph into a more energized and
organized side.
During that half and with the continuous fans' support and chants, WAC began
to slowly take control of the match. The game could have ended with WAC
scoring more than four goals considering WAC's performance.
Left winger Said Hilali scored three of the four goals earning him the MVP
honors, and Ali Hidara scored one.
The goals were high quality most notably Hilali's second goal which was a
pure show of skills: Charging with the ball from the left side, Hilali
dribbles two defenders to find himself face to face with the goalkeeper.
With the impression that he is about to kick the ball into the net, he
abruptly switched direction with the ball on his feet after the keeper had
already committed to one side, causing two chasing defenders to collide with
the goalie.
Hilali found himself alone before a wide open empty net. A gentle and a
cool kick saw the ball caressing the back of the net. Such goals shatter
defenses' confidence and that was the case in this instance for the opposing
team.
As for the other WAC players, there performance was solid and they
entertained the crowd. Their display of skill and talent was through making
nice crosses, covering each other and working as a team on defense, and
providing a Petit Pont for fan's amusement. Goalkeeper, Oussama Moukram,
was solid as usual.
Fans in turn provided entertainment themselves through occasionally teasing
their own team and making the players laugh, something that helped the
latter relax and have a good time on the pitch.
After the final whistle blow, teams shook hands and congratulations in a
show of good sportsmanship. League's commissioner then presented WAC with
the trophy declaring them Champions. Players, coaching staff, and fans
alike congratulated each other. Souvenirs were taken in form of pictures
and video.
It was heart-warming to see new friendships forged, old ones rekindled, and
people who have never met share joy and sense of pride and unity. As
community members they were together and on the same page even if only for
two hours. The entire experience was very positive and pleasant accentuating
the power of a pleasure as simple as WAC.

The Justice and Development Party (Arabic: حزب العدالة والتنمية) (French: Parti de la Justice et du Développement, abbreviated to PJD) is the largest opposition political party in Morocco. The PJD promotes Islamism and Islamic democracy.
History
The party was founded by Dr. Abdelkrim Al Khatib an old politician known for his close ties with the Monarchy, under the name of MPDC (French: Mouvement populaire démocratique et constitutionnel). The party was an empty shell for many years, until various members of a clandestine association Chabiba islamia, who later formed the MUR (French: Mouvement unité et réforme) joined the party, with the authorisation and encouragement of former interior minister Driss Basri. It later changed its name to current PJD in 1998, reminiscent of the better known Turkish Justice and Development Party (Adalet ve Kalkınma Partisi, AKP) which was founded three years later in 2001, however. It should be noted that the Moroccan PJD is less liberal and modern than the Turkish AKP, although a very slow modernisation process is going on.
Parliamentary representation
In the parliamentary election, held on 27 September 2002, the party won 42 out of 325 seats, winning most of the districts where it was allowed to compete. Its secretary-general since 2004 is Saadeddine Othmani, deputy of Inezgane, an outer suburb of Agadir. In the parliamentary election held on 7 September 2007, the PJD won 46 out of 325 seats, behind the Istiqlal Party, which won 52. This was contrary to expectations that the PJD would win the most seats.[1]
Ideology
The party had a tradition of publishing violent diatribes in the newspaper of the MUR (Attajdid), focusing its criticism on the Westernisation of Moroccan society (for example manners, women, clothing, social conduct), but not on the monarchy per se, as this is still a taboo subject in Morocco. However, since the 2003 Casablanca bombings it has considerably softened its criticism, and has adopted a lower profile and a more pragmatic attitude. The party's political and social program is considered by some to be vague, especially in its attitude towards civil liberties. 0 0

11 Showdown W/ Pres. Moroccan Human Rights Advisory Council A routine meeting with the Moroccan Community turned into a tense shouting match with a group of individuals that almost broke down the tent. One fellow charged the stage to within inches of the officials, another one accused Mr. Herzenni of being a sellout and stormed out of the room, another questioned the position on the stage of the official portrait. The first person to ask a question flatly asked for a group resignation of the advisory counsel on Human rights members for non performance. And it went downhill, or uphill depending on one's point of view, from there. Luckily, Mr., Herzenni, who was flanked by Morocco's ambassador, Mr. Aziz Mekouar on one side and by Minister in Charge of Consular Affairs, Mr. Hassan Khantach, on the other side, kept a cool demeanor, and withstood all the fire lobbed in his direction and said, in essence, that nobody promised a paradise in morocco, That there are many unresolved problems, that it takes more than grandstanding to repair a dysfunctional justice and education syems, that progress is being made gradually and that there are no overnight miracles, that patience is needed. It was rough and gritty democratic intercourse that succeeded despite the storm, thanks mostly to Mr. Herzenni's patience and experience, to the diplomatic team that organized the meeting and took some risks,to the rest of the attendees, like Mr. Sallam Chahdi, a human rights activist, who drove from Boston,to ask one question at the meeting.Visit http://www.moroccoboard.com . Morocco is the ideal country to launch a message of peace to the Muslim world.

Morocco is well positioned to hold this great event . Besides the long standing ties and good relations Morocco has with the US for over 200 years, there are many other factors that would lead the new elected Leader, Mr. Barack Obama to give a speech in Morocco .
Morocco enjoys political stability, a stability that is continuously strengthened as Morocco builds a modern democracy in the spirit of freedom, openness and tolerance.
Morocco is also well positioned as a Western ally in the global war on terror.

Morocco: Prospects for Genuine Reform? 3 Washington / Morocco Board News-- MoroccoBoard TV Has recently covered a major conference on Morocco in Washington that was organized by The Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED). The MBTV coverage followed up with interviews with conference participants...
Overshadowed by the dramatic political transitions underway in Tunisia, Egypt, and Libya, political events in Morocco -
including parliamentary elections have received very little attention in Western media. This belies the fact that the Moroccan political arena has been quite active in recent months. In July, Moroccans approved in a referendum constitutional reforms put forward by King Mohammed VI in an effort to respond to demands of protesters. Nonetheless, the youth-led February 20 Movement views these efforts as insufficient, calling for a boycott of the upcoming elections and resuming weekly protests to revive popular demand for further reform.
This conference has examined the Moroccan political landscape, including expectations for the upcoming parliamentary elections. Who are the main parties competing, and who is likely to perform well? What political forces are supporting the calls for boycott, and how might this affect results and the voter turnout? How are these elections likely to impact the opportunities for substantive political reform including shifts in the balance of power between elected institutions and the monarchy? And what steps can the U.S. and other international actors take to encourage meaningful reform in Morocco rather than merely superficial changes?
Three speakers have participated and and spoken about the current situation in Morocco.
Ahmed Benchemsi: Visiting scholar at Stanford University's Program on Arab Reform and Democracy at the Center on Democracy, Development, and the Rule of Law
Anouar Boukhars: Assistant Professor of Political Science and International Studies, McDaniel College
Marina Ottaway: Senior Associate, Middle East Program, Carnegie Endowment for International Peace
And the Moderator: Charles Dunne: Director for Middle East and North Africa Programs, Freedom House

Pro-monarchy, overwhelmingly Berber political party in Morocco.
The Mouvement Populaire (MP) was organized in 1956 - 1957 in the Rif. Its supporters were Berber notables and tribesmen, some of whom belonged to the Army of Liberation, and small landholders. It was founded to oppose the political domination of newly independent Morocco by the Istiqlal Party and to serve as a mechanism for Berber political participation in cooperation with the monarchy. At the same time, the MP sought to avoid being cast as a purely Berber party, and so became the voice of the rural masses neglected by the Istiqlal. Its founders were Abdelkarim Khatib, a former head of the Arab Liberation Army (and ethnically an Arab), and Majoub Ahardane, the governor of Rabat province. The Istiqlal-dominated government arrested its leaders in April 1958 and blocked its legalization. The MP was finally registered as a legal political party in February 1959.
The relationship between the monarchy and the MP was strengthened during the early 1960s, following the ascension to power of Hassan II and the split in the Istiqlal. In 1962 - 1963, the MP was the only organized group within the monarchist coalition, which ran in the 1963 elections under the banner of the Front pour la Défense des Institutions Constitutionelles (FDIC). It thus was able to take advantage of the boycott of the 1963 elections by Istiqlal and the Union Nationale des Forces Populaires (UNFP) and to fill many of the positions in provincial assemblies, chambers of commerce, and communal councils. Its base of economic and political power was strengthened by the regime's policy of Moroccanizing large tracts of land that had been controlled by the French administration and settlers.
In 1965 the defection from the ruling coalition of a single MP member deprived the government of its majority, sparking a constitutional crisis that led to King Hassan's assumption of emergency powers. In 1967 the MP split over personality differences between Ahardane and Khatib; the latter's breakaway faction took the name Mouvement Populaire Démocratique et Constitutionelle (MPDC), which in the 1990s served as the legal basis for a primarily Islamist party sanctioned by the authorities. Ahardane was expelled from the MP in 1985 for "authoritarian practices," and the party was taken over by Mohand Laenser. In July 1991 Ahardane co-founded the rival Mouvement National Populaire (MNP). In the 1993 parliamentary elections the MP, competing as part of the loyalist Entente/Wifaq bloc, won a total of fifty-one seats, a gain of four from the 1984 elections, and in the government reshuffle of January 1995, it attained three cabinet seats. In the 1997 elections the MP dropped to forty seats and was left out of the new, left-of-center government. In the 2002 elections there was a further drop, with the party winning twenty-seven seats. Still, the party did attain three cabinet posts in the newly formed government, with party head Laenser receiving the agriculture and rural development portfolio. How the MP and other Berber-based parties would be affected by the emergence of a more assertive Berber culture movement r

Hamid Kachmar's "Intricacies" Hamid Kachmar, a Moroccan born painter is now featured in an exhibition entitled "Intricacies" at the Parish gallery in Washington, DC.
Mr. Kachmar is a multifaceted, internationally trained artist of indigenous Moroccan Amazigh ancestry. His materials and techniques evoke metaphors, moods, and expressions from where he grew up and what he experienced during his studies and travels. His work is mostly, not entirely inspired by his Amazigh culture, his philosophy of life and survival and its embodiment in poetic objects such as weaving, wood carving, and body adornment, and he strives to employ universal metaphoric content to his work. MoroccoBoard TV, in this documentary, directs a spotlight on this unique and talented Artist.
I have recently been investigating the process by which transient and fugitive identities take place while collective cultural ones endure global osmosis in order to preserve their peculiarities. Although we live in a more cross-cultural and interconnected world we strive to understand, communicate, and express ourselves due to implications of cultural idioms, dislocations, alienations, and hegemonies. Translating that to my art, I consider my surfaces as spaces of transience, interaction, and transformation. They are constructed out of several intricate and interwoven visual elements. Identity, memory and daily encounters are the crux of my creative endeavor.
Mr. Kachmar received his BA degree from Meknes University in Morocco in 1995 and his MFA from Howard University in 2006. He teaches at the Childrens Studio School for Arts and Architecture in Washington, DC along with lecturing at Howard University.
For the past 12 years his works have been shown in exhibitions in Washington, DC, Virginia, Oregon, New England and North Carolina, along with exhibits in France, Spain, and Morocco.
He has been the recipient of several awards from Howard University and is an active supporter of Moroccan American children art workshops.

Town Hall 2 MoroccoBoard TV 's Town Hall Meeting between community members and the Moroccan American Coalition (MAC). The Town Hall meeting introduced the coalition to a larger audience, opened dialogue and doors of communication between MAC and the community. This was accomplished by providing MAC with a platform where it introduced and presented itself and its programs, and gave community members direct access to MAC for a direct conversation.
The panel was comprised of two MAC representatives; Boubker Abisorour, MAC V.P. and Hassan Samrhouni, MAC Exec Board Member and two experienced community activists Latifa ElHadri and Hamid Mernissi.
The questions received by email from the community were asked by the moderator, while the attendees had the floor open to ask their own.
Topics discussed varied from discussing MAC's vision, to ways to entice community members to join, to acquiring about clauses in the bylaws, among others.
Discussions and debates were at times heated and intense and other times light and cordial. There was also an atmosphere of openness, sincerity, and honesty in fielding questions or expressing opinions through commentaries.
It brings us great pleasure to share with you the taping of this Town Hall meeting and we do welcome any and all your commentaries.
The Program is now showing at Morocco Board

12-Showdown W/ Pres. Hassan Khantach, on the other side, kept a cool demeanor, and withstood all the fire lobbed in his direction and said, in essence, that nobody promised a paradise in morocco, That there are many unresolved problems, that it takes more than grandstanding to repair a dysfunctional justice and education systems, that progress is being made gradually and that there are no overnight miracles, that patience is needed. It was rough and gritty democratic intercourse that succeeded despite the storm, thanks mostly to Mr. Herzenni's patience and experience, to the diplomatic team that organized the meeting and took some risks,to the rest of the attendees, like Mr. Sallam Chahdi, a human rights activist, who drove from Boston,to ask one question at the meeting. Morocco: Prospects for Genuine Reform? 2 Washington / Morocco Board News-- MoroccoBoard TV Has recently covered a major conference on Morocco in Washington that was organized by The Project on Middle East Democracy (POMED).

Town Hall 7 MoroccoBoard TV 's Town Hall Meeting between community members and the Moroccan American Coalition (MAC).

Morocco's Ambassador on Changes occurring in Morocco members of the community gathered at the behest of the "Moroccan-Americans of the Greater Washington Area" (MAGWA) volunteers. The members formed 3 groups to work in a workshop fashion for the purpose of brainstorming and collecting ideas. The groups interacted in an inclusive, productive environment, and culminated their efforts with a number of recommendations that we, as volunteers, have summarized to the best of our abilities. They generally fall within five categories:
• Networking and organizing tools
• Activities and events
• Funding and resources
• Community's expectations from the authorities
• Moroccan territorial integrity
A- Networking and organizing tools:
The members recommend the following:
1. The creation of a website for the group. Names suggested include: - Moroccans in North America, MINA.org - Moroccan American Network:, MAN.org - Moroccan American Network Database, MANDB.org - WMUSA or WMORA, WeMoroccans-USA.org or WeMoroccans.org
2. The adoption of a theme - suggestion: Unity, Tolerance, Identity, Synergy.
3. The creation of a Board of Directors and Committees
