Polisario Front Plans to Ride RFK Award to a PR Bonanza
NEWS

moroccoboard.com

On Thursday November 13, 2008, Senator Ted Kennedy (D-Mass) will host a ceremony to award the 2008 Robert F. Kennedy Human Rights Award. This year’s recipient is Mrs. Aminatou Haidar, a militant and political spokesperson for the secessionist and separatist movement, the Polisario Front.
The Moroccan-American community is displeased over this selection and holds it to be a highly ideological decision and a politically motivated act that undermines the idea of promoting human rights.
Several observers view the selection of Ms Haidar and the hosting of the ceremony at the US Senate by a senior US Senator send the wrong signal to the people of Morocco and especially those in its southern provinces, and constitutes a break with the tradition of constructive neutrality maintained by the US government in the ongoing conflict between the kingdom of Morocco and the Polisario separatists.

Ms. Haidar , as a mater of record, rejects the autonomy plan presented by Morocco and acclaimed by 173 Members of Congress and other governments as the only viable solution to this political quagmire.

Several Moroccan-American grassroots organizations such as the Moroccan American Coalition (MAC) and the
Moroccan Congress of USA (MCU) have expressed their displeasure with this decision and have urged those who have made it to consider that Ms. Haidar enjoys the freedom of travel in and out of morocco and has recently accepted a large amount of money from the Moroccan government as restitution and compensation but she still has not renounced violence and continues to incite violent acts,
-the Polisario Front, a financial backer of Ms. Haidar, has committed serious violations of human rights against fellow Sahrawi living in the camps and has slowed or stalled the UN-brokered peace talks and routinely threatens a return to war and to the use of force whenever a UN resolution displeases it.
-This peace award will embolden the Polisario separatists to sabotage the next round of Manhasset peace talks sponsored by The UN and may negatively affect to the long lasting US-Morocco relations.

MAC and MCU have urged members of the Moroccan American community and friends of Morocco to contact Lynn Delaney, RFK Memorial Executive Director ( Delaney@RFKmemorial.org / Fax: 202-463-6606) and voice their opinion.

Hi Dear,
If what you said is true, the officials in Foreign Office Minister will know and took action consequently..
As a Moroccan, i don't like to hear these kind of allegations about these officials and i'm against that kind of behaviors and specially when it comes from high ranked who represent us on high level.
The mistake is human, but enduring the mistake, with no reason, is worst than the mistake itself. The polisario are Moroccan which were deviated from the right way but getting exces of tricky motivation by manipulators and this is the truth.Sans generalization, the truth is ,the time under Franco dictatorship, they couldn't behave...But, when polisario manipulators leaders find a space of liberty overseas, they forgot Franco time.To remember, in case anyone forget, the boundaries of Morocco were till the Senegal River (Read book of James Kay tltled Coins).

do not blame everything on Polisario

Asking several sources in Denmark why Moroccan government-controlled media would publish such a story at this moment that Denmark ousted the Polisario from the country , all independently told News that there had to be a connection with "the very amusing story" in Denmark's conservative daily 'Jyllands-Posten' about a sex scandal at the Moroccan Embassy in Copenhagen.

Consul Raddad el Okbani at the Embassy is accused of sexual harassment and corruption by the Danish-Moroccan population, out of which around 200 took to the streets on 15 November to demand his resignation. Protesters told 'Jyllands-Posten' how the Consul repeatedly had demanded bribes and sexual services to get his signature on official documents. He was also reported to have taken photographs of visitors to the Embassy, threatening with reprisals in Morocco if his personal demands were not met.

The Consul has been removed from the Moroccan Embassy in Copenhagen, probably having been sent home to Rabat. But the demonstrators are not satisfied, still demanding legal actions to be taken against him.

A lire bien les choses, vous marocains qui n'ecoutent que ce que dit le roi par peur non pas par education..........

At the time of colonization by Spain, 1884, Western Sahara was inhabited by peoples who, though nomadic, were politically and socially organized in tribes and under chiefs competent to represent them. Spain acquired its sovereignty over Western Sahara not by it as a land without an owner, terra nullius, but through agreements concluded with local rulers.

While Spain was the colonial ruler of the territory of Western Sahara, it did not have effective control over the people of the area. The Saharawis resisted colonization and there were bloody clashes until they were “pacified” in 1934. However at this time, and into the 1940s, the Spanish administered only a handful of settlements, none of which was larger than a medium sized village. El Aaiun (Laayoune), now the capital of Western Sahara was not established until 1940. Between 1956 and 1958 there were riots in Western Sahara and bloody battles between the Spanish and the Saharawi resistance.

In 1963, the United Nations (UN) included Western Sahara in the list of countries to be decolonized and asserted the right of the Saharawi people to self-determination. In 1966 the UN, for the first of many times, passed a resolution calling for this self-determination to be exercised by referendum.

OK guys, what happened did happen, we need to write to all of these senators and congressmen asking them the followings: Do they know the Sahrawi people? Do they know who is who? Do they know any thing about the history of this conflict? What are the criteria for a human rights award? Do they know what kind of human rights this Aminatou haidar is fighting for? Based on what she was nominated for this award? Do they know how many Sahrawi refuges are in the camps of Tindouf? Please write to each and every one of these politicians, and ask them these questions, and more! I promise you I will, and I will do that in details , and supported by historic facts. I also want to ask them if they know where is this Sahara? Our folks either in Washington DC, or in Morocco, are not doing their job! They are sleeping. Our folks in Washington DC, need to wake up! They have to stop underestimating the enemy, they have to take this issue with extreme seriousness! I have seen the video, and I heard that idiot calling our activist "dog barking"! That was insulting not only to our guy, but to the people of Morocco, our king, and the whole kingdom of Morocco as well! The kingdom of Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States of America, is this what we merit we deserve? For these people to favor a bunch of mercenaries over our nation! Our nation has always been by the side of the USA, is this what we deserve? A bunch of US politicians, who do not know anthing about the issue.
Guess what, this is just the beginning, if we don't wake up, we will no longer enjoy the support of the USA! Our folks in Washington DC, as well as in Morocco need to completely change the strategy and need to re-evaluate the tools! This is not working! I am saddened by this event! As stupid as it may seem, and Aminatou Haidar is nothing, but a "dog barcking" hypocrite working for the Algerian government but, it shows how far our government is from reality! It shows that we are not in control of defending our nation's norms and our territorial integrity! Please write to all of these guys, and just ask them simple questions. Especially about the real Sahrawi people who are presently living in Towns, Cities and Villages of our southern provinces! Ask them about the brave Sahrawi people who escape the camps and returned to their motherland Morocco!
Thank you all

I read an article here titled Biased article of Newyork times, the author said : "...
But then we bare some responsibility too, our officials should be ready to counter attack these erroneous claims; their job is to face the media head on with strength and confidence...." I agree with this author and with rachid, OUR DIPLOMACY is 000000 a big zero

Do you think it really matters, in the medium or even short term, whether Sahara becomes 1-Moroccan, 2- Autonomous under Morocco, 3-Independent or even Algerian? If we all intend the entire goal of UNION one day the answer is NO!
As far as know, time is now for union rather then for division and what we should, as young population of the Maghreb, is to look at what can enhance this union and make love spread all over the Maghreb instead of hate. The danger of hate between Algeria and Morocco is transmitted from generation to generation and spread by the media through official and unofficial declarations.
We have everything in common unless a mere line drawn on the map! I am born in Morocco and I am defending the Autonomous project but if I were born in Algeria, I might be saying something else and this is not a wise and impartial behaviour.
More then 30 years of hate and conflict is not easy to forget if we, as young people, do not start from now! We must stop insulting, offending or hurting the honour of Algerians through our official and non official declarations and through our media. Algerians must do the same. This is to start at least by avoiding negativist attitudes and declarations. Second, we have to start acting positively. Instead of hurting, we should think of how to meet Algerians in more friendly situations: Universities, associations, Erasmus programs. We will realise that we are the same and we all have great aspirations.
Look at Germany and France, they have been killing each for decades and now, thanks to these two counties and to Robert Shuman and other very few but extremely brave human beings, look at the European Union gathering 27 nations speaking 21 languages!!!
Morocco, Algeria and Sahrawi rulers are wasting time in very elementary issues instead of going to the essential: Thinking seriously of UNION with open heart and mind and everything will come alone!
YES WE also CAN!

Dear all,

When I readed your comments I couldn't stop the feeling of shame because people like living in USA, Europe, speak like this, with intolerance and hate to a people whose only crime is to hope being free in his independent country.
You seem to be more royalist than his royal Majesty.
If the sahrawi don't accept the autonomy plan is because of people like you and your government don't have any idea of other opinion respect and democracy.
In Moroco there is no liberty, no human rights, the sahrawi can't live with you because all you have is repression, hate, and poverty.
Sahrawi love you as a brother people but you hate them because all you know is repeating the government propagada speech.
Look at what's happening in Morocco with the press liberty, Sidi Ifni Events, etc and you'll know that you're defendig injustice.

Dear all,
I think the time has come to realize that whatever we did and are doing regarding the Sahara is not working because it is simply an extremely hard task and I confess to that, but we need to start thinking outside the box.
The problem is not this woman getting an award or holding a Moroccan passport and getting restitution money from the Moroccan government. By the way, paying this woman money is to admit your guilt. Not good.
This award if anything indicates that Algeria is doing much better job financing the Polisario to do Morocco harm. We spend Money on Malawi and others to change their support where we should spend on the sahraouis themselves to change their alienation.
Everything you read, you hear, or you see from the sahraouis is pure hate for the Moroccan and for M6 in particular. The question that we need to tackle is what we should do to reverse the tide for the sahraouis to start thinking that perhaps, they are better off with Morocco instead of their confinement to the camps of Tindouf.
As we all know Bouteflika stated very clearly that he will never deal with Morocco for as long as the “ last colony in Africa” is free. Bouteflika is changing the Algerian constitution to remain in power for another 7 years and therefore we cannot wait 7 more years for Algeria to have a change of heart.
Let’s start with the following and I hope that someone out there from our government will see this.

The friends and the enemies of Morocco know the details of the autonomy presented by Morocco except the Sahraouis themselves. We need to do whatever it takes to inform the Sahraouis in the Tindouf camps of the benefits of the autonomy, they need to know the details, they will need to know that they will have their self rule and especially they will live in dignity, prosperity and hopefully in a democracy ( if we stop jailing kids for a grafitti).
Reaching out to the everyday sahraouis is the right thing to do and much wiser than reaching out to some minuscule country that we have never heard of.
I have to say that I am very happy and proud that M6 finally and bluntly stated that Algeria is the root of the problem. If you read their papers, they are surely not happy.
Kissing off to Algeria is a loosing battle, we have been trying for decades and sending congratulations messages to each other and the next day, Algeria is bashing us all over the place.

Lastly and please let’s not go after some Aminatou or anyone like her, first of all that is not going to solve the problem, as a matter of fact, it is very wise that she has a Moroccan passport, otherwise Norway, Sweden, or even Spain will have one ready for her in matter of seconds. We need to look at the broader picture. This Aminatou will get her award. Remember that Shimon Perez received his Nobel Peace Prize and then what? I have yet to see any peace for the Palestinians.
Also remember that it is the regular guy and gal of East Germany who crossed to the west not their military. Let’s focus on the everyday Sahraoui, forget the Polisario for now because they are well to do under the current Algerian regime. When, the Polisario starts feeling the pressure, they’ll eventually switch side one by one.
Good Day!

Ms. Haidar\'s ego boost!
First , let me congratulate you most warmly for this prompt reactions and initiatives to defend the Moroccan Sahara.I personally express my discontent for this unjustified nomination. Aminatou Haidar does ignore the truth and what she does is travelling all around the world spreading false testimonies and allegations about the Moroccan Sahara. It is of the essence to mention that this self-proclaimed activist travels in and outside the Kingdom with a Moroccan passport. It would be easy to imagine that the Moroccan border authorities can, on substantiated grounds, stop her from entering or exiting the country, but the Moroccan government still chooses not to. This very hard fact is a loud testimony to Morocco's commitment to free speech and other process rights pertaining to civil and political rights Haidar is practicing.
Still as a Moroccan I strongly remain hopeful that the International community would unequivocally support the democratic process launched by the government of Morocco. Backing our peaceful struggle to reach our legitimate rights is inseparable from the fight against injustice and it is also a harbinger of justice and democracy to OUR Southern Moroccan Provinces.
