NEWS

The Public prosecutor in Casablanca has ordered the arrest of Mr. Chakib Khayari, a leader in the fight against drug trafficking in northern Morocco, announced the Moroccan Interior Ministry in Rabat  last Thursday.
Mr. Chakib Khayari who also chairs the Human Rights Association of the Rif Region, which had previously denounced the persecution of the Sub-Saharan Illegal Immigration Candidates in northern Morocco and the arbitrariness of the Spanish police in Melilla that prevents the entry of Moroccan citizens to the Spanish occupied presidio.
This militant is known among reporters who work in the Northern City of Nador.  He would, often times, be sitting at a cafe pouring over Google Maps identifying the locations of the fast boats that transport the hashish to the Spanish coast across the Mediterranean. He would later be perched, with binoculars, at sunset, on the shore, to see the drugs being loaded on the outboards.

Ten plainclothes policemen arrested him on Wednesday at his home in Nador. The agents seized his computer and personal items. They did not indicate where they were taking him. Moroccan NGOs and Human Rights Watch called on the authorities to follow the law and report the location and the reason for his arrest.
The Interior Ministry later indicated that Mr. Chakib Khayari had been arrested and brought before a court.
The Police interrogated him about his previous statements to the media about people involved in drug traffic  "people who have important positions in state institutions." These statements according to the Interior ministry were "unfounded" and "tend to damage the image of the national judicial authorities " that "are striving to combat drug trafficking” in Northern Morocco.
So far, over a 100 people in have been arrested for drug trafficking from the city of Nador to Spain, Belgium or the Netherlands.
Most of the people arrested are members of the military and the security forces (29 Royal Navy sailors, 27 officers of the Auxiliary Forces, 19 policemen and a soldier).
King Mohamed VI has also removed the admiral and chief inspector of the Royal Navy from office.
Late last year the area under cannabis cultivation in Morocco was reduced to 60,000 hectares, 65% less than five years ago, when it stood at 134,000.

The Moroccan judicial system is the most corrupt in the world. Remember that 2M, the Moroccan national T.V. station did a documentary whereby it stated that Morocco ranked the 2nd most corrupt country in the world after the country of Albania. Those judges need to go to hell.

Reason for Arrest?
What was he arrested for? I think that is key information if we are to indulge in the subject of human rights and freedom of speech in Morocco.
