COLUMBUS — In the Internet age, news travels fast. Faster than a mother of four traveling between Columbus and Englewood.
Fatiha Elgharib left her house Thursday, April 2, thinking immigration officials would deport her to her native Morocco. But an hour after surrendering to agents at the U.S. Immigration and Customs Enforcement office in downtown Columbus, her last-minute motion for a stay was granted.
Elgharib and her husband, Youssef Hamdi, decided to surprise their four kids with the happy news in person. But before they got home, friends had called the children after reading the breaking news online at DaytonDailyNews.com.
"It was great. The kids were just ecstatic to see her," said Denise Hamdi, Elgharib's sister-in-law.

Elgharib's attorney, George Katchmer of Yellow Springs, said he received help from U.S. Sen. George Voinovich's office in the last 48 hours.
Elgharib and Hamdi have four children: Sara, 18, Tina, 16, Wafaa, 9, and Sami, 6. Sami has Down syndrome and medical needs that wouldn't be adequately handled in Morocco, Hamdi said. Sami and Wafaa are U.S. citizens.
The one-year stay gives Katchmer time to argue for permanent residency for the couple and their children. And it allows Fatiha to continue as a stay-at-home mom.
"She's a great mom," Denise Hamdi said. "It's what she lives for."

I would like to congratulate the Hamdi family and their lawyer. We need some more grassroots news such as this one, the good, the bad and the ugly. We would like to help as much as we can before things get out of hands. Many members of our community are struggling and the solution is usually within grasps and in many cases,is a matter of a simple advise.
I would like to thank MoroccoBoard Staff who seem to take constructive criticism and improve their grassroots effort

Hi. Fatiha ElGharib is my sister-in-law. I am an american married to Mohamed Hamdi, brother of Fatiha's husband. Mohamed and his family were born and raised in Morocco. We would like to thank C.A.I.R. - Counsel for American Islamic Relations, Sen. George Voinavich, and Attourney George Katchmer for the victories Fatiha has had this month.
In 2007 Fathia was imprisoned for 5 months. We could get no one to help get her released. It was not until the Dayton Daily News did an article that she was released. I would think that if there is a Moroccan community or an Islamic community in this country, you all would do more to help those who are "you." We have fought and were so lucky to have found the current lawyer. George has been the driving force behind the stay Fatiha got last week. If not for him, CAIR would not have gotten involved and therefore neither would Voinavich's office. We tried both and others numerous times. We were told they could not help us if we got a response at all.
My point is this-because of people getting involved Fatiha is now with her four children. Her youngest has Downs Syndrome and is solely reliant on Fatiha. He needs her and he needs the American medical system. Please, look for opportunities to help those in your community or those whom you can help. Noone would help Fatiha until it was almost too late. We thank God for the mercy she has been given and hope and pray for continued guidance and good news for her and her family.
You can contact me at for any questions about their story. I will also send pictures. They are a beautiful family and have been trying for over a decade to stay in America. Legally. Thank you for your support and concern for the family.
