ROBERT WIENER A Jewish museum tells bittersweet
CASABLANCA — At first, the conversation I heard between the Moroccan rug dealer and the American tourist sounded typical.“Where are you from?” asked the salesman in Meknes. Before she could answer “Tel Aviv,” he began singing a lilting Israeli folksong: “Hinei ma tov u’manayim, shevat ahim gam yahad.” “We don’t know anti-Semitism,” the museum’s flamboyant director, Simon Levy, insisted. “We have our religion, and we do have a new problem of Islamism; it is true that some Islamists don’t want Jews.” But, he said, “We consider this museum is open to all persons to fight this ignorance of Judaism.” Sitting beside a hand-carved wooden bima salvaged from a 19th-century Moroccan synagogue, Levy spoke with pride about a people who “lived in every city and every village and every tribe for 2,000 years. In time of the Romans, there were Jews here, too. Before Islam, we were there.” At its peak in the late 1940s, there were some 300,000 Jews in a country of seven million. Today, the estimates range from 2,400 to 5,000.
While others left Morocco — many to make aliya — Levy’s family remained in Fez, where his grandfather headed the hevra kadisha, or burial society. Troubled by the emigration of fellow Moroccan Jews, the museum director expressed ambivalent views of Israel, its current prime minister, and the reaction years ago to Palestinian leader Yasser Arafat.
Bensoussan was a teenager when his family left Casablanca in 1965 and recalls a boyhood and early adolescence “with very good memories. Generally speaking, the life was good. But you know, we were walking on a very thin thread all the time.”

Sholom The person below (Lof)is a perfect troll. He/She is not a Moroccan but one who dislikes Morocco and is invested in the idea that Jews & Muslims can't coexist harmoniously anywhere; so much so that the example of tolerance or even philo-semitism is too inconvenient/loathsome. As for using "Yahudi" as a pejorative, I can honestly say that this use is totally unknown to me, my family, and peers. You and yours must be at fault there. Parts of Morocco have been hostile to Jews in the past, and however inexcusable, this has been the acute exception not the rule. I disagree with the idea - which I realise was hardly insinuated - that "Islamism" is a force, or could be a force favourable to anti-Semitism. The interpretations and school of Islam we follow is too benign for this. This in my opinion is policed by our society's tendency to shun that which is bad. |

... What the article doesn't mention, is the very real hatred for Jews in Morocco. In our dialect, "yehudi" is used to refer to a traitor, rufian or as a generic insult. Most often, it's not said to the Jew's face, but it's there. Moreover, it is virtually impossible for Jews to build a synagogue in the country. But sure, if your reference is Saudi Arabia or Egypt, then Morocco is a relatively tolerant country. Let it be known though that Moroccans can be (and are) prosecuted for changing religion, having out-of-wedlock sex or drinking alcohol. |

Islamists are our problem! Reading your article, I was angred by the fact that Islamists ruined thousands year relation between us! Islamists are our big threat! In fact they are destroying our ethics and values as we inhereted them from our parents. They are a threat to all, regardless of age, gender, religion, skin color, or geographic location! This is a universal problem; except in a country such as Morocco, it shows quick and big! Keep in mind being poor and illitrate does not help either. If we were well developed and well educated, we wouldn't be in such a situation today. I just hope that intellects like you when visiting or writing some thing about Morocco, would try to put things in perspective with the history of this country. Untile the islamist invasion, Morocco was a peaceful nation in which both communities Muslims and Jews lived together in peace and harmony. Jewish people in Morocco were just like any other Moroccan Muslim! They were rich and poor, they were officials, and they all served the country with the same degree of love and commitment. Both communities Jews and Muslims have shown unity, and brotherly coexistence throughout the history. Just like the rest of Moroccans Muslims, Moroccan Jews built this country, and also sacrificed their blood for the independece fighting the colonial power. They contributed and still do to the growth and the development of Morocco. We ought to recognize their loyality to this country, and we need to respect their rights to live, and practice their Jewish faith freely. We all believe in the same GOD. We call him Allah, they call him Ellohem, others call him Dieu, Dios, God, depends on the language! The point is no body owns GOD, the oposit is the truth. We all belong to him, God does not belong to any one of us! We need to respect each other's belief, and try to promote peace, tolerance and coexistence between us. Morocco today is not the same; today we are invaded by extremists, I am sure you have seen Afgani like people walking dwon the streets every where, and beared people with mesirable faces all over! This was not the case of Morocco before; we are not chiit, or wahabists; we are Sunnis, and we believe in Imam Malek doctrine. Thank you |
