| Moroccan King Announces Go Ahead For Western Sahara Authonomy Plan |
| NEWS | |||||||||||
Washington, King Mohammed VI of Morocco has announced plans to give the Western Sahara region autonomy. He promised the people in this region “freedom to administer their own local affairs.” The result, he said, would lead to the renovation and modernization of the Moroccan state."We intend to make recovered southern provinces among the first beneficiaries of the advanced regionalization, … We are determined to move forward in achieving our commitment to allow loyal residents ..of our Moroccan Sahara to have greater leeway in managing their own local affairs and this, within the framework of the advanced regionalization, that we will implement with a sovereign national will." The Moroccan king said. "Morocco cannot confine itself to the status quo while the enemies of our territorial integrity strive to hinder the UN process which is aimed at finding a realistic and mutually acceptable political solution to the contrived dispute over these provinces " he added A 22-member Advisory Committee on Regionalization was recently named in a bid to transfer power away from the capital Rabat and to reiterate Morocco’s claims to Western Sahara. Morocco has taken over the provinces when Spain left the colony in 1975. the Algerian-backed western sahara separatists Polisario Front has been fighting for independence ever since. Several United Nations initiatives to resolve the dispute have all failed. Moroccoboard News Servics -- 2010

I can't see the change! Morocco had, and still has, 16 regions under the leadership of the region's Wali. till now I can't see any changes. maybe a reduction in the number of regions, more decision power to the Wali (budget), or reorganisation of natural resources incomes to benefit the region... this might help, not only the sahara but whole Morocco, to have a decentralized mng, offering more growth opportunities to the regions. Otherwise, where's the change? |

Wise decision This is by no means a difficult but wise decision to regionalize this part of Morocco and put its autonomy into reality.It shows that His majesty King Mohamed VI is a realist.Let us see now what the other parties are going to do.Algeria is likely to oppose this plan as it may open hope for some Berber population to be autonomous .The Polisario gangsters will be crying foul.Spain will continue to doubt Morocco initiative and particularly hate seeing the area and its people being developed. It is also an important decision for Morocco future as a state.Morocco will be stronger and leaner.I hope other regions will follow.Autonomy and local administration is key to progress cuts down bureaucracy and abuse .Important of all,corruption may be seeing its end .It is counterproductive to continue to administer the whole country from Rabat in terms of budgeting and taxes. |

Boutflika not happy about the autonomy Granting autonomy to the sahraouis is a step in the right direction. The sahraouis in Tindof will be watching, The ennemies of Morocco; boutefilika and his puppet generals will be watching, Spain will be watching, Human rights organizations will be watching, the Arab world will be watching. Unless this autonomy is real, all the mentioned will find it a simple trick to extend the status quo. I am mot not sure how wise is selecting this Azziman as the head of the committee of this so called decentralization. Azziman has been nothing but a disaster to Morocco's relation with Spain. He should have warned His boss not to send Aminatou back to Spain and save the entire nation for the embarrassment that was caused by hidora. I do however command the king of getting a rid of Benmousa, Under Benmoussa's watch, Morocco has been getting punched left and right but the enemies of our territorial integrity. He gave them too many ammunition to attack Morocco is the media and in the Human Rights organization headquarters. I am not sure how long Fassi fihri will last but i guess he will be kept for as long as the king cannot find someone better. The truth is that the king does not have many to chose from. He is probly tired of the old timer. I also do not see how wise in picking naciri as the justice minister who is also a disaster. I guess we just have to wait ad see, again a REAL autonomy can be a big blow to Bouteflika and his gangs. |

... AGAIN, this move sadly was long overdue and Morocco missed yet another opportunity to show leadership and initiave. Morocco should have implemented its proposal for the sahara very soon after its publication. I was always of the opinion that the proposal (for enlarged autonomy) MUST be time sensitive (i.e. should be withdrawn as an option if hostile parties dont agree to it within given time scale). A full scale implementation of the proposal was another good initiative. However implementing it now (rather than earlier) will allow critics to suggest that this decision to establish a commission is attributed partly to recent event in lanzarote Airport where this so called Haidar staged a hunger strike and the Sahara question which has received renewed international attention. still, better late than never i am glad to see it put in place, better late than never |

... No one will trust you, why now ? when you feel the heat you always try to come up with something new, sorry you are left with one option only, "WAR" because Sahraouis are looking for their freedom and independence. |
