Akamai: Morocco has the fastest Internet Connection in Africa

02/08/10 ( Morocco Board News Service ) --- Akamai, The U.S. Company that specializes in managing Internet, has recently published a report on Internet around the world, during the 3rd quarter 2009. According to the report, Morocco has best connection in Africa.
The UK has the fastest connection to Africa. Rabat tops the rankings by city, with a connection speed of 3251 kilobits per second (Kbps). Followed by Tunis (2211 Kbps) and Casablanca (2030 Kbps). The best in Africa still remains behind the rest of the world. For example, the United States, (18th worldwide) has a rate that is 10 times higher than Morocco (33464 Kbps). The golden award winner goes to South Korea (14.6 Megabits per second).
From another perspective, Morocco would benefit more from a better penetration of broadband (from 5 Mbps). Rabat leads with 26%, followed by Casablanca (7.3%). The city of Midrand (South Africa) comes third. Despite these statistics, Morocco is still far behind some leaders, including the United States with a rate of 92%.

Even in terms of average speed connections (from 2 Mbps), Morocco has again the best penetration. Rabat leads with 61%, followed by Tunis (48%), followed by Casablanca (33%). With rates at 99% the United States and some European countries are far ahead.

The report was based on information collected from Akamai global network of servers. The report also listed stats on cyber attacks. The study traced the attacks to more than 207 countries around the world. 
A surprising highlight, the United States and China who were the largest providers of pirates in the past have now been surpassed by Russia and Brazil.

Hope for a good connection
This spring I have to work remotely for one week from Meknes, Morocco. I sure hope for a good connection to keep communication alive with the US. I'm taking with me the MajicJack gadget to allow calling the US for minimal rates...

Far away from reality
In Morocco we are living in technology monopole no body can compete with Maroc Telecom (Vivandi/French), Meditel (Telefonica/Spain) and Wanna (ONA and Kuwait's Zain). Morocco has borrowed too much money from the French and the Spanish as guarantee they get full access to the Telecom market, without competition or control. Agence National Reglementation des Telecom (ANRT) can’t and will do nothing about it, because they have no power to take any decision.
I’m telecom engineer with more than 15 years of experience in the telecom market worldwide; I was looking forward to open cheap telephony solution for the Moroccan market (80% to 90% cheaper of the current prices in Morocco). When I try to market my product, I nearly end up in prison because I’m not allowed to operate in Morocco, The funny think I opened my company via the official channels (Centre d’investisement). My point is that Morocco can’t go forward without opening the market to the real competition.
If you have no competion, why you will care about your customer?
If you start any business in Morocco with high earning than you may end up in prison. You are welcome to sell tomatoes or bring second hand equipments from EU, but please don’t touch:
Telecom
Alcohol
Energy
Etc
Now I’m forced to keep working in EU, because my country in not ready yet for change.

let me give two anecdotes that will illustrates fully how crooked Maroc Telecom is. It is actually ripping Moroccans left and right and every quarters you have the media writing about how phenomenal its profits are. Of Course, they are stealing from every one.
I have asked for my Internet line to be disconnected and I also asked for my phone line to be disconnected, I was told that it is done. One year later i find out that Maroc telecom disconnected my phone line BUT THEY CONTINUED TO DEBIT MY BANK ACCOUNT FOR THE INTERNET ACCESS.
When we went to complain, they said, sorry BUT your were getting internet.
HAS ANY ONE SEEN internet connection without a phone line CONNECTION???
Only with Maroc telecom.
NO wonder they are making huge profit. it is your money going to France.

I think that most of Rabat was brought to a standstill last week when Maroc Telecom went down in Rabat. For about three days, almost everyone in Rabat was dialing the Customer care number for Maroc Telecoms internet division.

Here is what I will never forget... If you ask for a supervisor, you are told that there are no supervisors. If you ask to escalate a complaint, you are told there is no mechanism by which that can be done. If ask for a contact number for the over paid underworked management of Maroc Telecom, you are told that information is not given out to customers.

It is really not possible to illustrate to anyone who has not experienced it first hand. Maroc Telecom and Royal Air Maroc have contempt for Morocco and disdain for everything that is Moroccan. I will go even further, I am certain that Royal Air Maroc and Maroc Telecom hate all Moroccans with a Passion. How else can you explain the poor customer care that borders on criminal?

How do you not have a supervisor that can assist with a problem available? How do you not have a working method for filing a complaint? How do you have these two companies getting Moroccan tax dollars to be rude to Moroccan customers?

I got rid of Maroc Telecom recently and have made the switch over to Wana. As for Royal Air Maroc, when I say that I would rather swim shark infested waters than ride one of their planes, I am not exagerating. Time for these two evil reminders of what is still wrong with Morocco to go the way of the dinosaur. Everyone should boycott Maroc Telecom and Royal Air Maroc until they get a customer care department that actually cares.
