PETITION TO HAVE BARACK OBAMA SPEAK IN MOROCCO

President-elect Barack Obama’s aides say that he is considering to make a major foreign policy speech from an Islamic capital during his first 100 days in office.
Here is why It should be Morocco :
What do you call an Arab, Amazigh, Muslim and African country who was the first to recognize the United State of America's independence?      Kingdom Of Morocco
What do you call a moderate, tolerant and peaceful country who is the strongest ally to the United States in the region?    Kingdom Of Morocco.
What do you call Obama's first foreign policy speech overseas in Morocco after his inauguration?          A historical moment.

  •  Casablanca would be a great choice at all for its historical significance. After all, it was FDR who came to Morocco in 1942 with Churchill and De-Gaulle to sign the Alliance in the presence of Morocco’s King in Casablanca. Given the fact that many parallels have already been drawn between FDR and Obama, especially considering the daunting economic challenges both faced, it would be good to draw attention to a reform-oriented Muslim country like Morocco. On top of it, Morocco was the first country to recognize the United States as a country, so what better time for Morocco to be able to side once again with the United States as when ushering in a new reign of democracy in the world?
  •  Morocco has started a political reform process since the mid-1990s; it also saw the first truth commission in the Arab world. Morocco has also been a strong ally of the United States, a country that played a role in bringing Israelis and Palestinians together and pushing for peace and a two states solution, before it became fashionable. Morocco was the first Muslim country to invite Pope Jean Paul to speak to stadium with 80,000 Muslims. Morocco is also an African and Arab Amazigh country, with a multi-ethnic-religious flair; it is a country that years ago integrated an Islamic political party into the political game. So, an Obama trip to Morocco would certainly validate the changes and promote an agenda of reform
  • Morocco combines the African, Arab, Amazigh, and Muslim worlds in a wonderful harmony, and is the home of a new and dynamic young king that compliments Obama and shares his vision of change.
    Obama and Morocco--a perfect match!
  • When America knocked on the world’s door, Morocco was the first to say “Welcome America, We Recognize Your independence” when the Arab World sided with Moscow, Morocco refused to be bullied and claimed its loyalty to its long time friends in Washington. The US-Moroccan relations are a true testament of mutual respect, friendship and loyalty and shared values.
  • The Sultan of Morocco Muhammad III was the first foreign ruler to recognize the US as an independent republic in 1777, and the longest unbroken treaty in US diplomatic history is with Morocco, the M-A Treaty of Friendship (signed by Jefferson in 1787).
  • Today Morocco remains the OLDEST and one of the closets allies in the region. U.S. relations with Morocco date from 1777, when the two nations negotiated a Treaty of Peace and Friendship. Renegotiated in 1836. The treaty is still in force, constituting the longest unbroken treaty relationship in U.S. history
  •  Exceptional relationships maintained between Kingdom of Morocco with All the American Presidents from FDR, Eisenhower Kennedy to Bush...
  •  Morocco is well positioned to be an ideal place for this historic event to take place
  • Historic great relationship Morocco and the United States have and continue to enjoy. It started back in 1777 when Morocco took the action of allowing ships with US flags to enter Morocco when other nations were reluctant to do so if not opposed to it.
  •  Morocco enjoys great friendly relationships with the predominant majority of countries in the world, Muslim or otherwise.
  •  Morocco hosts the intellectual think-tank of the Islamic Conference, known as the CESCO Islamic Cultural, Educational, and Scientific Conference Organization.
  •  Morocco chairs the "Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Committee", Al-Quds is at the forefront in any eventual peace agreement in the Middle East.
  •  Morocco boasts moderate Islam and a proven record in the brokerage of a search for peace in the Middle East
  •  Morocco has all the ingredients to make this historic speech an effective and successful event.
  •  Morocco and its people played and are still paying a major role in bringing peace to the Middle East.
  •  Morocco was a staunch ally of the USA during the cold war.
  •  Morocco has played an important role in the fight against terrorism, and is a country that could be used as a model of tolerance where Muslims and Jews live side by side in harmony.
  •  Morocco is well respected in the Muslim and Arab world and throughout Africa, and is considered a moderate voice in all these regions.
  •  Morocco as an African Muslim country, it has developed into a model for religious tolerance and cultural diversity.
  •  Morocco has made great progress in human rights and gender equality.
  •  Morocco enjoys political stability, a stability that is continuously strengthened as we build a modern democracy in the spirit of freedom, openness and tolerance. This is a vision that is led and implemented with strong resolve and determinations by Morocco's young King.
  •  Morocco is also well positioned as a Western ally in the global war on terror
  •  Morocco offers a rich and widely diversified potential as it is strategically located on both the Mediterranean Sea and Atlantic Ocean, within 7 miles from Europe and serves as a gateway to both Africa and the Arab-Muslim world.
  •  The diversity of Amazigh, Arabs, and Jews, to name a few, who have lived side by side for centuries, as well as its close ties to Europe, has made Morocco a different country than many of its neighbors.
  •  Morocco is indeed the destination for religious tolerance, co-existence, and a symbol of harmonious living where everyone is welcome!
  •  The US-Moroccan strong ties will personify this historical moment and will utterly strengthen the US foreign relationships and send a clear message specifically to the Islamic world and to the rest in general
  •  Morocco places high value on its long-standing history of friendship and cooperation with the United States. It has been an invaluable partner in the wake of terrorist attacks on the United States
  •  Morocco is a Major non-NATO ally with the US and the strength of the Moroccan-US relationship is well-known in the world!
  •  peace and love , السلام والمحبة ,la paix et l'amour , שלום ואהבה , ειρήνη και αγάπη , hòa bình và tình yêu , мира и любви , la paz y el amor .
  •  Obama choosing Morocco as his venue for an important foreign policy speech. What better site to choose than the oldest friend of the United States, and its nearest neighbor across the Atlantic? Morocco was not only the first nation to recognize American independence; the Kingdom has a long history of friendship and mutual support with the American people. Moreover, Morocco is a progressive, tolerant and moderate Muslim nation at the crossroads of three worlds: African, European, and Arab. What better place to choose for stating a new world policy?
  •  Holding a speech in Morocco can only help to break down the terrible misconceptions that the majority of Americans hold regarding the Muslim way of life..

The Moroccan Community is one of the fastest growing communities in the USA, Moroccan Americans  Democrats, republicans and independents are inviting President Elect Obama to Make Morocco the home for his first foreign policy speech abroad.
President elect Obama, please accept our invitation. Not only do we support your vision for change, but we are ready to help you make it happen. Let this speech in Morocco be the start of a new day for America's relation with the Muslim World

I think the petition is not convincing. Personally, I don't think Obama's first such speech should be in Morocco because it is clearly an irrelevant spot in the midst of the politico-econom ic crisis. His first speech should be right in the middle of the soup, in Iraq. He should probably end his foreign tour with Morocco where he can enjoy some good food.

Cheers.

Mister President, your visit to Morocco would send a clear signal to the Muslim world: tolerance is what has always driven our religion and you would simply confirm that the path to take for other Muslim countries is as simple as the example of Morocco: an open country that has never forgot its traditions, where religions have always lived peacefully, and resolutely willing to face the challenges of a modern era.

Mister President, welcome to your home, welcome to MOROCCO!

As a native-born American, I believe Morocco would be the ideal country for our new President to speak out to the Muslim World. As a leader and US ally within the Muslim World in political and economic reform, Morocco would be the ideal venue from which to seek resolve from the world's strife. Please, Mr. President-elect , visit Morocco.

Because Morocco is the US oldest friend and ally...

Because Morocco turned to the US when all the other Arab countries chose to side with the eastern block...

Because I can't think of a safer, more American-friend ly, hospitable and welcoming place than Morocco in the whole Arab Muslim world ...

Because of the exceptional relationships that Our monarchy maintained with All the American Presidents From Kennedy to Bush...

Because Morocco is a young nation that achieved several milestones in the past few years in terms of Human Rights and Democracy..

Because Many Moroccan Americans voted YES WE CAN ...

I am inviting the leader of the free world to Choose the land of Hope: MOROCCO

Morocco would make an ideal forum for President Obama. Morocco combines the African, Arab, Berber, and Muslim worlds in a wonderful harmony, and is the home of a new and dynamic young king that compliments Obama and his vision of change.

I've been to Morocco ten times now and have very much fallen in love with the place. A part of it is exotic and new and exciting and fun; another part is ancient and mysterious. All of it is fascinating. It has an allure and a dynamic magnetism. It is beautiful and safe with incredibly friendly people who pride themselves on their hospitality.

I cannot help but think that President Obama would love Morocco as much as I do.

What an excellent idea and I welcome President Obama to consider the the support of the Moroccan Americans, a 200,00 + growing community who based on the 2008 Pre-Election Survey, are 69% Democrats.

Morocco is an old friend of the US and a respected Muslim country in the Region.

The perfect place. The perfect time. Yes you can Mr. President speak in Morocco.

I think that it is a good idea but let's be real. It is not about what Obama can do for Morocco, it is what Morocco can do for Obama.

Burkina faso was mentioned in the New York Times but not Morocco.
http://www.nytimes.com/2008/12/04/us/politics/04web-cooper.html

What needs to be done is how do we convey to Obama that he can benefit from Morocco as a perfect location for his speech.

Some of you are saying we are friends , we are the first to recognize, other Arabs were more pro soviet ( Let's not walk over our Arab brothers and sisters to get to our destination. Aren't we Arab as well?)...We need to keep in mind that the west think business first, Friendship is last on their list. If friendship was the key in our relations, then why is the US never said " The Sahara is Moroccan".
I suggest that you think of way to convey to the Obama folks that a speech from Morocco would accomplish his goal of wanting to make peace with the Muslim world.
How do we convey? How about a march to the Moroccan consulate with signs indicating that we welcome Obama. You will get a ton press covering the event, I think we can have couple of hundred people with signs welcoming Obama. This may be a dumb idea but if you can think of better way, we would be very supportive.
As for the web site Mr. Hassan, please mention how Obama would benefit from Morocco if selected as the location of the speech.
Good Day!!

Obama should visit Morocco not to give a speech but rather to visit Marrakech and enjoy some food like every other tourist. If Obama should visit a country then my first choice would be somewhere like Iraq where the action is or maybe some place like Saudi Arabia, Egypt or Jordan where people are still living under some form or another of dictatorship. Morocco is just a spectator and should stay that way.

God bless...

I believe that the election of Barack Obama as the 44th President of the U.S. will be seen by historians as a turning point in the history of the US and the world.
From all what we know about Mr. Obama and the way he has handled matters since Election Day, I believe that this turning point will be a positive one. The world already sees us differently than it did prior to November 4, 2008. I was on a recent trip to Morocco and France, and I noticed that first hand. I was amazed to see the change in the perception of the USA in the eyes of the people of these two countries after Mr. Obama’s election. Everybody I talked to wanted to discuss Mr. Obama’s election and the great majority believed that his election was a good thing. I was told in France that more than 80 % of the people of that country thought that Mr. Obama will have a positive impact on world affairs.
One of the areas of the world, where America’s image suffered tremendously in the last eight years is the Arab and Muslim world, which accounts for over 20 % of the world population. There is a great hope that Mr. Obama will restore America’s image in this part of the world.
I was very pleased to learn that President-Elect Obama is considering a major foreign policy speech from an Islamic capital during his first 100 days in office. This is a great idea and I sincerely hope that it will become a reality. I believe that the ideal place to deliver this speech from is Morocco. Morocco has all the ingredients to make this historic speech an effective and successful event.
Morocco is a Muslim-Arab and African country with historic ties to the US. Moroccans pride themselves in been the first country to recognize the independent United States of America. They also pride themselves in been a part of the longest peace and friendship treaty that the USA has ever signed.
Morocco and its people played and are still paying a major role in bringing peace to the Middle East.
Morocco was a staunch ally of the USA during the cold war.
Morocco has played an important role in the fight against terrorism, and is a country that could be used as a model of tolerance where Muslims and Jews live side by side in harmony.
Morocco is well respected in the Muslim and Arab world and throughout Africa, and is considered a moderate voice in all these regions.
By its proximity to Europe, the message could well resonate with Europeans in general and Muslim Europeans in particular.
I sincerely hope that this speech will take place, and will be delivered from Morocco. I wish Mr. Obama the best and we all support him and are behind him in his efforts to make this world a safer one.

Three undeniably convincing reasons why President-elect Obama should consider Morocco as the choice for a "Muslim" country to speak to Muslims around the world:

1. Morocco hosts the intellectual think-tank of the Islamic Conference, known as the Islamic Conference Educational, Scientic and Cultural Organization (ICESCO);

2. Morocco chairs the "Al-Quds (Jerusalem) Committee", Al-Quds being one of the major symbols of Islam;

3. Morocco boasts moderate Islam and a proven record in the brokerage of a just peace in the Middle East.

because my dad grew up in Agadir, Moocco and everybody loved Barack and my

still thrilled about the election. so for the last week before the election my
older sis and I stood out with our Obama signs screaming at the top of our lungs

I don't think the Obama administration will select Morocco for its major foreign policy speech for several reasons. First, Morocco has not played any significant role in shaping policy towards the Arab-Israeli conflict. Granted that Morocco is an ally of the U.S., but the movers and shakers of the U.S. foreign policy do not regard Morocco as having a major clout to to be a change agent the conflict mentioned above. Secondly, the Obama aides will most likely pick Egypt or Jordan for their geographical (mid-east) location because Morocco is not a Middle Eastern nation. More importantly, Egypt is by far the most powerful Arab country thanks to its historical, military and demographic stature in the Arab world. Finally, despite the fact that Morocco was the first country to recognize American independence, the U.S. administration is well aware of the symbolic significance of asking Egypt or Jordan to host such a grand speech event because of the reasons mentioned earlier. Morocco is definitely a loyal ally of the U.S., but so are Egypt (the second highest financial aid to Egypt after Israel) and Jordan. I sure hope Morocco will have that honor of having Obama deliver his major foreign policy speech there; however, the reality will be otherwise.

Welcome Mr. President to the land of people, land of peace lovers. here is what I found to tell you Mr. President:
Why Morocco is a friend to USA. and why you should pick Morocco for your first speech as planned .

The Kingdom of Morocco is the oldest strategic ally of the United States, having recognized the nation shortly after it declared its independence from Great Britain in 1776. The treaty of friendship between the United States and the Kingdom of Morocco, which is still in force, was the first international treaty ratified by the American Congress, making Morocco America's oldest diplomatic partner.

Morocco places high value on its long-standing history of friendship and cooperation with the United States. It has been an invaluable partner in the wake of terrorist attacks on the United States. Its own commitment to progressive political and social development has also made the Kingdom an exemplary partner in the United States effort to promote and support political, economic and social reforms in the broader Middle East region. As it has in the past at critical moments, Morocco also continues to play a strategically important role in the effort to resolve the on-going conflict between Israel and Palestine.

Morocco is indeed the destination for religious tolerance, co-existence, and a symbol of harmonious living where everyone is welcome!
The US-Moroccan strong ties will personify this historical moment and will utterly strengthen the US foreign relationships and send a clear message specifically to the Islamic world and to the rest in general, that the US is NOW under a new leadership. A leadership that strives for change, peace, and democracy. Our beloved King Mohammed VI has been our champion of change and a man of great vision and defiant style of leadership. I am thrilled to learn that President-Elect Obama is considering visiting a Muslim country in the first one hundred days of his presidency. I am also happy that Morocco is on the short list of countries being considered for this important visit. As a Moroccan-Americ an and big supporter of President-Elect Obama, I hope that he will consider Morocco for the following reasons:

1. Morocco has always been a great supporter of the U.S. in the fight against terrorism.
2. As an African Muslim country, it has developed into a model for religious tolerance and cultural diversity.
3. Morocco has made great progress in human rights and gender equality.

The speech most likely is the beginning of a reconciliation process between Islamic forces and the West. According to Prez-Elect Obama's previous statements, the resolution of the vexing Middle East problems is a regional one. Thus, he needs to build goodwill and consensus in the Islamic streets for a comprehensive middle east peace agreement with Israel, and to the undermine the anti-American arguments of Islamic fundamentalists who organize terrorism.

I think the ideal place would be Casablanca, Morocco. Morocco has started a political reform process since the mid-1990s; it also saw the first truth commission in the Arab world. Morocco is also an African and Arab country, with a multi-ethnic-re ligious flair; it is a country that years ago integrated an Islamist political party into the political game. So, an Obama trip to Morocco would certainly validate the changes and promote an agenda of reform. It will also address the shared human values and the deep concerns of obscurantist puritanical ideology.

Hi all my Moroccan friends,
Hi everyone !

Thanks for starting this wonderful initiative in order to have Obama, the New President of the USA, give a speech in Morocco.

During the US elections, I was hoping that Obama will become the next US president and hopefully, he did. I am inspired by his truly inspiring speeches (Example that I like: There is no Black America, There is no white America, There is the United States of America. There is no Latino America, there is no Muslim America- not sure-, there is the USA), his charisma, his character and his message of CHANGE: YES WE CAN !

Since the beginning of the elections, I became a virtual volunteer for Barack Hussein Obama, I sent emails, I wrote blogs and invited hundreds of friends all over the world to vote for Obama and to for his message of CHANGE not only for USA but for the world.

So, YES WE CAN MOROCCANS BRING OBAMA TO OUR BEAUTIFUL MUSLIM HOMELAND.

Please, show you support to the cause by signing our petition on TakingITGlobal, a global community for young leaders: http://petitions.takingitglobal.org/obamainmorocco

Whether in Rabat, the administrative capitol, Casablanca, the commercial capitol, or Marrakesh or Fes, the old Imperial capitols, Morocco should top the list. Among the reasons: The Sultan of Morocco Muhammad III was the first foreign ruler to recognize the US as an independent republic in 1777, and the longest unbroken treaty in US diplomatic history is with Morocco, the M-A Treaty of Friendship (signed by Jefferson in 1787). We've had such a long and rich relationship Morocco, why doesn't Obama honor them with this gesture.

Why not choose Morocco? Morocco is important for U.S. interests in the region as our oldest ally (yes it is true) and as a stable, democratizing, and liberalizing Arab Muslim nation. Morocco is also important as a partner in the global war on terrorism and as a constructive force in the pursuit of Middle East peace and other regional security challenges.

What about Rabat? Morocco is relatively safe, mostly Arab, home to the world's oldest university, a meeting point of cultures for centuries, and, while far from democratic, does not have Egypt's dismal human rights record.

Rabat wouldn’t be a bad choice at all for its historical significance. After all, it was FDR who came to Morocco in 1942 with Churchill and DeGaulle to sign the Alliance in the presence of Morocco’s King at the Palace d’anfa in Casablanca.

It is despicable to always ignore that morocco is an amazigh country first and foremost. the arab and muslim traits were injected later in the country, following a bloody invasion that has relegated the amazigh people to the lowest stairs of the country.

* During Obama's campaign, Obama never condemned those who accused him of being a Muslim or challenged their bigotry by indicating to them that being a Muslim is not a negative thing. Instead, Obama spent a considerable effort proving that he was a "good Christian".
* Obama's campaign website had a section explaining to his supporters how he was not a Muslim and that he never attended any "Islamic" education. Being a Muslim has become worse than being accused of using drugs.
* Only Collin Powell had the guts to tell everyone that being a Muslim itself should not matter. Obama himself never said it.
* In one of Obama's campaigns, 2 veiled Muslim women had to be removed from the audience because they were sitting right behind where he was standing. Having any Muslim presence in any of the photos has become a liability for Obama and Obama did nothing to question it.
* The officials Obama is appointing for his cabinet are so not progressive that the Wall Street Journal and mainstream right-wing magazines started to praise him for his "centrist" choices. Most of the officials involved in this horrible war in Iraq are going to remain the same. Obama is in fact rewarding them and has already told the press that he may back down from his withdrawal plan form occupied Iraq.
* After accusing Hillary Clinton of having no experience in foreign affairs, he appoints her as the head of the state department (ie foreign affairs ministry). Just how many lies these politicians have to tell to get a job in the government?

While I am happy that Bush is out and that McCain did not win, I am not sure anymore that Obama will bring any change.

If Morocco is the strongest ally of the US, then why don't Moroccans volunteer to go to Iraq to fight with the US government and embrace the US government policies that killed over 1 million Iraqi civilians in less than 5 years?

Sometimes I so wish I was not Moroccan when I read these comments coming from other Moroccans who makes it sound that it would a privilege for Morocco to host an official from a government that has spilled the blood of hundreds of thousands of innocent people with an impunity unknown to even the Moroccan government itself.

Let Obama go to Iraq and let him apologize to the millions of Iraqis who have been wounded both physically and morally. Let Obama officially apologize to the countless Iraqi families who lost their loved ones because of the reckless policies of the US government.

I do not want Obama in Morocco.

As an Arab nationalist, I'd like to note that Morocco is not only an Arab country, it is also an Amazigh country. In order to please the US government, we are even willing to change our identity.

What a sad state of affairs.

I am sick of the Moroccan mentality and the way we Moroccans always think that others will fix our own problems.

Why Morocco?

US War on terrorism continue to be overwhelmingly present at all fronts. The US leadership believes it is in WAR with what it calls “Radical Islam.” Whether you agree with such characterizatio n of not, this is the current state of things in the US, and as to be expected, such an underlying belief will continue to drive US foreign policy for a long time to come.

US war on terror is fought at many fronts, including its active efforts in discrediting Wahabism and other questionable interpretations of the religion of Islam.

What does that have to do with Morocco?

Surprisingly enough, many in EU and even here in the US have taken notice of the current state of Islam in Morocco and the role of its government in combating Wahabism and other foreign interpretations . To many, Morocco is an undeniably a successful case study to model after and to support.

To make Morocco the home of Obama’s first speech will undoubtedly be historical for many reasons; most importantly, it will send a strong signal to the Muslim world that the US is ready and able to support all efforts, including local projects that fight radicalism and false interpretations of the peaceful and loving religion of Islam.

To Ahmed Lahjouji:

With all due respect, you are welcome to join those who support this imperialist "war on terror" that killed so many innocent people unnecessary, continues to destabilize our regions and to dictate to entire nations by the use of force/coercion how they should conduct their lives and how they should govern themselves.

Most Muslims in the world do not support this "War on Terror" waged by the US government. In fact, many non-Muslims don't either. South-America alone should suffice as an example.

Anyone familiar with Moroccan politics understands that even our Moroccan activists who often protest the Moroccan government abuses and who are progressive and forward-thinkin g oppose US policy.

US foreign policy (ie spreading freedom) is nothing more than the 21st century version of the imperialist policies waged by Britain (White man burden) and France (mission civilatrice) in the last century that killed and subjected millions of people.

It is our duty as human beings to speak up against these authoritarian policies imposed on others by the use of violence.

Mr. Casawi-

If you want to discuss the morality of “War on Terror”, then you’ve chosen the wrong place for your misdirected comment.

The subject matter and what the petition at hand tries to accomplish is to make the case that president elect Obama ought to choose Morocco for his first speech because it is the best of all choices.

How do you do that?

One way is to look at the facts are they are and if you can make the numbers add up, then your case is made, provided that you are not outsmarted by your competitors.

There is time and place for all things.

Mr Lahjouji,
I think casawi is right to bring up how the US conducted itself under the Bush administration. He can defend himself but he is simply saying that that the US conduct was so bad that he does not see why we have to embrace and support Obama's speech in Morocco. Just like many here think that we are so committed to the US "war on terror" that Obama should speak in Morocco.
As you can see, it is not matter of place and time.
I personally hope that Obama will accept this initiative and speak from Morocco.
Wishful thinking but who knows?

Ahmed Lahjouji, I hope you review your comment to casawi. Casawi is clearly not off topic, I\'m surprised you disqualified his idea. He brings up War on Terror because the petition boasts of the lack of terror in Morocco. So logically your reply is the one that is off topic by attempting to intimidate and sensor a fellow Moroccan, in a time when every Moroccan\'s voice is needed. Again, these are mere replies to, commentaries around and critiques of ideas by ideas, and not against people. I like to keep it that way at least.

I\'m not sure where all this hype about Obama speaking in Morocco is coming from. Is this an exercise of measuring lobbying abilities by a few Moroccans in DC? It is great to learn lobbying and involve oneself with it. But it sounds like the choice of this exercise is idiotic for this episode. If you really think hard and deep and be honest with yourself, do you really think that in the midst of a war in Iraq and Afghanistan fuelled by a soup of terror perception and freedom fantasies, do you really think anybody cares what happened 200 or 300 years ago when history claims that Morocco acknowledged the US? Do you think the white house cared about Baghdad when not so long ago, the white house empowered Baghdad against Tehran? shouldn\'t you know that governments have benefits and not friends. Yesterday\'s friend is today\'s no-man and probably tomorrow\'s enemy. Is this the best argument this lobbying exercise could come up with? it sounds like a poor man begging for change. I wouldn't jump on this rattling wagon. And if Obama ends up giving his speech from Morocco it would certainly surprise me but I wouldn't read too much into it. What is important is the content of his message. I actually envy anyone who gets to visit Morocco because I love my country too much.

I think the new Moroccan, and Salmane's Le Petit Marocain (great motivational idea by the way Slimane), should be at least actual in their thinking if not progressive. Ultimately intelligent in choosing what they lobby for. Lobby for concrete work that touches people\'s lives in ways that please God. If Moroccans lobby, it should be for Obama\'s speech as close as possible to the suffering people for justice. Obama claims to bring change, then let him change the way speeches are given. Give them among the suffering, and not from another white house, another Casablanca. If Moroccan should lobby, they should lobby for what the content of the message should be. What do you want Obama to say, and not where should he give the speech from: Casa, Rabat, Fes, Tanja, Kesh ~ I\'m really pissed you folks left out Oujda where Americans had an important base once :-)

What are you after when you lobby for this petition? are you looking for attention? are you looking to make Morocco in the news one day or one week and forgotten thereafter? Is this a reflection of the Moroccan phenomenon of empty showoff and being content with how one looks today from the outside? I am not trying to offend anyone, except those who choose to be offended. I guess the Moroccan proverb sums up what I wanted to say: Ash khassek al3aryan, alkhatem amoulay.

Morocco is a symbol of peace, tolerance, hope and co-existence. I agree, but only to some extent. It\'s a mini symbol in all four, and one would be a fool to deny that several other Muslim countries share these symbols as well. Morocco is also alienated from the Middle east politically, economically, geographically and culturally. If Obama speaks in Morocco to Muslim nations out there, what does it mean to Obama? How does it help Obama\'s message? what does it mean to these Muslim nations?

For me, Obama speaking in Morocco is like shooting a flying dragon with a water balloon by hand from a desert where water runs dry the next minute.

Focus on what you want Obama to say. Lobby for the real stuff and not the petty.

Dear Adnane,
You hit the nail on the head on most but I do think that Obama's speech from Morocco could be very beneficial for the country that you love so much. We need to keep in mind that the world judges you on who it perceive you to be and not on who you are.
There is still talk up to this day about the Israeli-Egyptia n secret peace negotiations in Morocco and therefore Morocco is perceived as land of peace and it is. If Obama's makes his speech from Morocco, what dos Morocco have to lose? It will move Morocco's image to a better place, which will encourage more trust and investment and that will help alleviate the poverty and the unemployment problem.

As for lobbying for the content of Obamas speech, I think that asking for too much at this time.

Dear all:

Let’s not get bogged down with “right and wrong” stuff – this is petition with a very narrow scope. You either support the effort or don’t.

By opening every possible tangentional link, nomatter how remote, for debate, you are in fact diluting the message at the price of missing out on YET ANOTHER OPPORTUNITY and we all know how many of those come around.

I believe, to be effective at anything, your must focus your resources; otherwise you’ll never get anything done.

So, what is at issue here is whether Obama visit’s tomorrow, as described, can potentially be favorable to a country will all love and want to succeed. I believe the answer is absolutely yes.

Let’s not forget that there are those (e.g., not far away form Morocco) who are/will lobby against such a visit because of the threat that such a visit represent.

In my humble opinion, if WE can pull this off, the rewards – which you’ll have to determine for yourself – are “too deep and lasting” to ignore.

Now, let’s convince Obama that choosing Morocco for his first speech is the best decision for HIM – isn’t this rooted in the art of salesmanship!

You decide.

Ps. No offense intended.

"Let’s not get bogged down with “right and wrong” stuff"

Ya wa7ad al politicien! but of course Ahmed I come from a school that talks about what is right and what is wrong and makes sure to follow what is right even if it crystalizes at the lips of the opinion opposite to mine. I don't get bogged down during the process.

"this is petition with a very narrow scope"

Amen. You've said it all. And how big is the reward? well your idea is to invite me to determine the reward for myself. Ahmed, there is no reward for me. Good luck with your self-generated reward and spotlight.

"You either support the effort or not."

That's true. So I don't support the effort, but this article has enabled comments which gives me the right to write. Please don't try to alienate people who have a different opinion from writing.

Among the core culprits behind most misunderstandin gs is unguarded “bleed though” between “fact and interpretation. ” Often, the two are completely indistinguishab le -- the consequence of which is self evident.

Three tests come to mind:

1. What is the question?
2. Fact or interpretation?
3. Do I have enough information to judge?

I hope that’s helpful.

Hmimarmad cheers, this is going to be a long one I should have been succint.

But look, the beneficial part to Morocco you mentioned is one of the things I don't appreciate. It is flat on suggesting to use the entire misery of the middle east to benefit Morocco albeit an uncertain benefit: perceived foreign trust and investment. The idea in my judgement breeds selfishness, insincerity and chauvinism as opposed to responsibility, sincerity and unbias.

I have nothing against Moroccans expressing their nationalism and patriotism, but the devotion they speak about is unreasoned in today's context. Because their devotion is based on a passionate feeling of longing for the homeland, it shouldn't interfere with today's context. And it is with contempt and disregard for other Muslims in more important communities.

If the signees really care about the well-being of the Muslim world, they would work towards consolidating their lobbying and organisation efforts with other Muslims in America to effectively lobby together to influence the tone of Obama's message and policy throughout MENA. This is the chance for Moroccans to shine in America as part of a think-tank solution, as part of the Muslim world, and not as an island. The long term reward could possibly bring more power back to Morocco and more of the investment all of us want for Morocco.

Morocco has been a loyal and agreeable friend to the US, maybe. Why do we want to convey to others to follow suit? don't you think this is asking too much from others? Morocco is spiritually tolerant because the majority of Muslims and a small minority of law-abiding and trouble-free Maimonide Jews coexist (if we totally ignore the Casablanca bombings). But, do we have any Shia representation in Morocco? No. Then, if Obama's real target is Iraq and Iran by association, and the Shia represent the majority there, why would he want to come off as a Sunni biased leader by speaking from a Sunni country. He should speak from the battlefield. Morocco spreads peace, sense and simplicity (Philips might fire me because I'm infringing on their copyrighted trademark here).. I really agree with that, and I'm ready to cover up the exceptions: madrid bombings, ansterdam slaughter.

Other countries don't necessarily lack the leverage, soft and hard powers that Morocco lacks. Other countries don't necessarily have to follow Morocco's model. They have their own criteria, hence they should design different models.

By the way, I am yet to hear of anybody investing anywhere these days let alone in Morocco. The major investment in Morocco there is lately is real-estate projects from petro-dollars. So Obama does not add much leverage. Obama has so much on his plate to help correct the course of the US economy alone.

Thanks Hmimarmad for your feedback to my post anyways. I assure you I will stand corrected if I am convinced. Listen, if Obama ends up speaking in Morocco, and his speech echoes peace and shakes foreign investors pockets to pour money into Morocco, then I would have learned the lesson of a lifetime: Never underestimate a narrow-scoped Moroccan petition born in DC. Thanks Moroccoboard for the opportunity to read and understand one another.

Cheers.

Dear Friends,

I would like to add my voice to those supporting the idea of President-elect Obama choosing Morocco as his venue for an important foreign policy speech. What better site to choose than the oldest friend of the United States, and its nearest neighbor across the Atlantic? Morocco was not only the first nation to recognize American independence, the Kingdom has a long history of friendship and mutual support with the American people. Moreover, Morocco is a progressive, tolerant and moderate Muslim nation at the crossroads of three worlds: African, European, and Arab. What better place to choose for stating a new world policy?

I strongly encourage the Obama administration to consider this opportunity to make such a statement of solidarity, and commend those who are promoting the invitation.

If there is anything we can do to make this a reality, please do let us know. We can write letters, make phone calls, even do some lobbying

Mr President,

It will be a good idea and a historical moment if you decide to give your first speech to Muslim countries in Morocco, since distant past to this moment Morocco is the most appropriate place for tolerance, moderation and peace. Morocco is the right example of tolerance between Muslims, Jewish and christian faith . Also Morocco is at the same time Muslim, African, Berber and Arab country, so given your speech Mr president in Morocco will give many positive signs to the rest of the world.
Morocco is also the most democratic country in the Arab world, and your act will push further more democracy in Morocco and throughout Arab and Muslim countries.
we will be proud all Moroccans to receive you in Rabat.

your visit to Morocco would send a clear signal to the Muslim world: tolerance is what has always driven our religion and you would simply confirm that the path to take for other Muslim countries is as simple as the example of Morocco: an open country that has never forgot its traditions, where religions have always lived peacefully, and resolutely willing to face the challenges of a modern era.

American people should be welcomed to Morocco not the president:
since he represent a country that occupied 2 Muslim countries and supporting Isreal occupation of Palestine. he also represent that is preparing to destroy 2 more countries(Sudan and Iran). he should not be welcomed because he represent a country that support dictators to rule over the muslim world.
if Obama wants to be welcome in Morocco then he needs to understand that our religion is our life and if your government needs to put measures to combat Islamophobia and haterd against Muslims in the USA and the world by putting a stop to Hollywood spreading of ilamophobia.
If Obama is for change then he needs nominate some Muslims to his cabinet. as Muslims represent one the most succefull/ educated communities in the USA. if he is for change then he needs to stop supporting dictators and help empowering the locals not by spreading Fitna and civil war in our regions.
I hope That Morocco does not allow him to use it's territory to give a speech untill he proves to us that he is serious about enhancing the US reputation in the Muslim world.

I think it will be the best choice and Obama seems to be a moderate President, even if he is going to bear a big pressure from some lobbies in USA.
At the same time USA is forced to do so by encouraging Obama to give such speech to Arab and Islamic world. Because the country is in a terrible situation at this moment (financial crisis, defeat in Iraq and Afghanistan, China and South East Asian countries start to take the role as center of the world, Europe has reached the peak, etc..).
USA is obliged to do so. The Americans are trying to avoid to be collapsed at any price. So every thing comes at the right moment. Both parties (USA and Islamic world will benefit from such action).
For the Americans, Obama is the right person to save what could be saved. That’s why he is elected as the first non white President of USA. Good luck for him, he will get success if the lobbies stay a little bit a way from his policy and strategy towards our world.
President Obama, welcome to the Kingdom of Morocco and good luck.

I am really optimistic about Morocco's future. This is a big change not only for Morocco but also for the whole continent as well. It will bring closeness for all of us. I am a proud Moroccan, African, Arab, and Berber and I am welcoming him to our Country. I went to one of his events in Phoenix, AZ and I was amazed by his vision and his hard working skills. I do truly admire him a lot and it would be the GREATEST day for us.

Welcome to Morocco.

Dear President Obama,

I am a Moroccan National residing in Williamsburg Virginia. The Moroccan Community as a whole in the seven cities area of Newport News, Hampton, Norfolk, Virginia Beach, Williamsburg, Portsmouth, and Chesapeake is a very tight knit society. We came to the polls in great numbers to Vote for Obama to be our next President of The United States. We take great pride in being Moroccan Americans, and we take great pride in being allowed to vote in the electoral process. As a Moroccan national I Wish that the next President of the United States uses our historic and deeply rooted alliance in the best efforts for both of my beloved countries. Morocco is a peaceful tolerant country, and we wish to be viewed as an olive branch to peace in the middle east. Moroccan People are a very politicaly motivated and wide reaching group of people. We enjoy talking over coffee and tea about the world as a whole and how we see it. If President obama chooses to speak in Morocco i Believe the outcome will be Greatly favorable. The moroccan people will greet President Obama with the utmost respect and dignity. We wish to embrace this New president and possibly help Improve America's Image to the world as a whole. As a Moroccan National i would be greatly appreciative of President Obama choosing Morocco to deliver a speech that may possible change the views of the islamic world about America.

Sincerely,

As a Moroccan Amazigh, I would NOT support this visit or speech if it were ever to happen. I shall remind you that Morocco bans its native and majority people from naming their children names of their own cutlure, the native culture.

This preposteros racist act/law, among many others, goes against everything Obama ran for, was elecot for, and stands for.

For Obama to give his first speech in Morocco, a moderate African Arabic-Islamic country, will be a boost to his foreign politics..Moroc co's history needs no introduction; if this speech should take place, it's an opportunity for Obama to present his new foreign political plans and approches to the whole world..Obama is facing so many challenges at home and abroad..People around the globe are fed up with politics; let's see some actions because rhetorics has become an old song that has been played out..Obama!! I suggest you go to Morocco and make sure you are well prepared to make a historical speech because you made history at home already, being the first African-America n to be elected president..I am positive that this speech will take place in Morocco without a doubt..

Good luck to you Obama

Azul Ayour,

As an Amazigh myself, firstly I don't think the infamous official list of names is racist. It is not only certain Amazigh names that are banned, few Arab names are also banned. You could say it is discriminatory or arbitrary coming a government which doesn't represent full the people wishes.

Secondly, I don't think what you call "Amazigh culture" is anymore native than other "cultures". They are all Moroccan cultures and have become native to Morocco. Amazigh culture itself did not grow out of the ground of North Africa and history did not start with the rise of Amazigh identify in North Africa some 3000 years ago.

Finally, I find it amusing that you identify with the ideals of Obama or any other US official when the fate of the native Indians in North America is well known and has been reduced within 200 years to nothing more than few reservations or Indian ghettos in which these people have become foreigners in their own lands and movie subjects to demonize in western Hollywood films (didn't we all cheer against the "savage Indians" in these movies?)

I highly suggest you visit few Indian reservations in the US to see for yourself before you wish that we Amazigh honor what some has termed as the genocide of the native Indians in North America.

Native Indians should come to Morocco to compare what happened to them within 200 years and what happened in Morocco in 1300 years. I was going to say that it may inspire them but then again there aren't many left of them.

As an American who grew up in Morocco, I'm thrilled at the prospect of Mr. Obama giving his speech there. I went to school at Nouasseur for 10 years and lived in Casablanca. I look forward to Mr. Obama meeting the wonderful, dignified, and kind people of a country I love. Morocco is the only country that truly makes sense for this.

Dear Humans,
The first time a saw M.BHObama talking, i knew he will be the next president.
At this moment, i was a student in a business school, and we engaged at our level discussions about the new face of USA if OBAMA is elected. We talked a lot about economic and geopolitical relations between USA and the Kingdom of Morocco. We talked also about relations between USA and ;African countries; Arab countries; Islamic countries.
The discussions were made under the direct supervision of M.Khalid Naciri, our geopolitics professor, who became lately the Moroccan Minister of Communication.
We tried at that moment to imagine the point of view of american citizens and concluded that there are many things to do and that the wind of changes is knocking on our doors.
By the way, i remember a friend of mine who declared: Why can't we organise a visio-conferenc e with Obama?
The idea was approved but the materialisation of it never happened because we were at the same time preparing our final exams.
Now, as Sir Obama is the President of The USA, and as he declared that he is the president of muslim, christian, jews, agnostic...amer icans, the hope of seing him giving a speach in a muslim country become more possible.
The elected president, and our dear King Mohamed the VI, have more in common than any others couple.
America loves OBAMA, Morocco Loves Mohamed VI.
Both of them brought HOPE and CHANGE in their countries, so why not confirming all that and more through an official visit.
Mister the President, all the Moroccan free minds and spirits, are ready and full of joy to welcome you and exchange with point of views, aiming of building a valuable relationship, based on respect, dignity, peace, hope and CHANGE.
Good luck mister the president, good luck my lovely King, good luck to the "Yes We Can", good luck for the politics 2.0.

I totally disagree,
Morocco has has a totalitarian regime that does not respect the basic human freedoms.
Deeply conservative mentality.
Rigid mentality to criticism
No freedom to give a name of choice has its children
Etc...
For god sake, Morocco is NOT the right spot for Obama.

IFNI CITY COUNCEL
0 #92 SAVE IFNI AIRPORTIFNI CITY COUNCEL 2011-04-27 11:17
IFNI airport was built by the Spanish authority as well as all the city and has played a significant roll in Development of the whole region.

Hence, thanks to the airport , IFNI CITY COUNCIL became the most beautifully progressive city in Northwest Africa, having around 5000 visitors every month, today no more than 100/year. Now, there is a serious threat whereby Moroccan mafia construction companies that want to muscle in and take control of IFNI airport's land .

Some voices pretend to use the airport land to built houses, we think that the city should be built but in the north or south areas: not at our airport's land expenses. The airport was built to remain.

Today most of modern cities have airport, because its a wise tool to bring success, freedom and peace to the residents.

Rumors suggest that the developer behind the idea to close the airport and built houses, is the proper X minister of interior and member of his family.

We, the supporters and undersigned of the 'Save IFNI AIRPORT ' petition, call to put a stop to the "airports ministry" destroying project and we urge you to sport legacy, nostalgia and IFNI patrimony.

We request you to join us and say No to the closing and destruction of our airport's space.

Say Yes to keep IFNI airport opened as an operational airport.

Please write to your local representative and invite him/her to vote against this mafia project and to keep IFNI airport opened. Remember that thanks to this small airport the life of USA soldiers has been saved (summer 98..) as will as many patients, are evacuated from around the city of IFNI to the city hospital.
