Soccer feud between Algeria and Egypt spiraling out of control
HASSAN MASIKY
The ongoing feud between Algerian and Egyptian soccer fans ahead of the Soccer World Cup qualifier between the tow national teams is spiraling out of control damaging relationships between the tow countries and the two people.

The unfortunate attack by stone throwing Egyptian hooligans against the Algerian team in Cairo came at a moment when insults between bloggers form both sides reached a level if viciousness that has surpassed the norms of civility and decadency. Most of these revolting remarks were made by over-zealous Egyptian and Algerian young soccer fans, However, a comment by a well known Egyptian commentator to an Egyptian Television station during which he belittled the sacrifices of the Algerian people during Algeria’s revolution war set the tone of the debate.

The injection of politics into a soccer game is a sign of intellectual weakness. The Egyptian press was first to mix apples and oranges by constantly referring to Egypt’s help to the Algerians during Algeria’s war of independence, as if the soccer game is some military exercise!

More disturbing are the Egyptian police denial that Algerian players were injured during the attack at the Cairo hotel and that the Algerian team staged the incident. The FIFA denied both contentions, making the Egyptian police and press look pathetic.

Egypt is indisputably a soccer powerhouse that is not in need of lies and cheap attacks against their opponents to win. This year Algerian soccer team has been stealing the hearts of soccer fans all around the world. It has been a pleasure to watch the Algerian team plays beautifully, unpretentious and from the heart soccer.

The Egyptians are frustrated by Algeria’s recent successes in amassing a large mass of fans outside Algeria. Egyptian offensive comments about Algeria’s history, dialect, and costumes further galvanized Algeria’s fans. Reading comments posted to Moroccan websites, the Moroccan public was sad to see such malicious campaign over a soccer game poisons relationships between to brotherly countries; however, Moroccan soccer fans came on the side of the Algerian team for several reasons.

The spineless showing by Morocco’s national team during their games was such a disappointment to the Moroccan public turning many Moroccan fans to support their neighbor’s brilliant team. If Moroccan players seemed playing half-heartily and without fire, the Algerians played from the heart and with conviction, winning the Moroccan public by a large. The Moroccans also felt that some of the gratuitous comments that were made by the Egyptian press and public to bash the Algerian team were offensive to the Moroccan, and where in some ways targeted to all “North Africans.” Sad, but Egypt had squandered the respect and esteem of many Arabs over a simple soccer game. When the respected Egyptian daily claims that the Algerian staged the bus attack, it is time for the Egyptians to revisit their priorities.

This “crisis” is likely to be nothing but a summer cloud that would eventually evaporate.  The bilateral relations between Algiers and Cairo will not suffer; it is after all just a soccer game. For now, let’s play ball and may the best team wins.

Shame on Egypt!
There is absolutely no excuse for the behavior of the Egyptian fans and the authorities in Cairo toward the Algerian soccer team and the Algerian supporters that came to support their team.It is a big shock to all of us from the Arab world !!!!!!!!!!!!!!!Why ??????????.The Egyptian fans acted like cowards. Is this the way guests are greeted in Egypt? What have the Algerians done to deserve such treatment?Everyone in the world community witnessed the calamity that took place and still the Egyptian had the audacity and stupidity to deny it at the highest levels (Unbelievable)?!!!!!Are the french, the Spanish, the U.S,the Moroccan and other media groups who reported this event all wrong????Is the FIFA who issued a strong warning to the Egyptian regarding the mistreatment of the Algerian team lying???We are not favoring any team here.May the best win!It is just a game for God sake!!!!Many people lost loved ones during this tragedy.Individuals that were brutalized and murdered for the passion of a game.Dear ones that lived for many years disappeared.Do we value a game more than a person????The Egyptian behavior is totally unacceptable!!!!!!!!!!!!Our sympathy goes to the Algerian team and the Algerian supporters that were brutalized and murdered in Cairo.Despite the political differences between Morocco and Algeria regarding the issue of the Western Sahara, nationals from both nations never engaged in any form of violence against each other.Moroccans and Algerians have played in both countries for many years and never attacked each other.Do we have to start playing in other countries now in order to feel secure after this tragedy?Shame on the Egyptian fans for their awful behavior and shame on the members of the Egyptian Authorities present that day who failed to prevent this calamity! We are not blaming all the Egyptians here.I am confident that people in Egypt were against the violence that took place.

Brotherhood and Sisterhood
I am of Algerian parents born in Casablanca, my parents were wanted by the French because of their involvement during the Algerian Revolution so they sought refuge in Morocco and got it. I have two mothers, a Moroccan mother that took care of me as if I was her son and an Algerian mother. I remember very clearly the kindness and the hospitality as well as the support that we got from the Moroccans who are our Brothers and Sisters and a great people . My heart aches when I think of the discord that exists between our two countries and I do mean it. Now about that soccer game and Egypt: How convenient that there is so much brouhaha, at the end of the day who is being served by such a situation? We need to have more contacts with all the people of our continent and celebrate our diversity and not fall into the traps that are laid for us by the hidden grey men who would like to control our destiny through misplaced passion of soccer games. Lets take a deep breath and start thinking for ourselves.

Thank you for your Support Fellow Morrocans
I'd like to thank Morrocans for all their support.
It is sad to see how Egyptians hate North Africans and make fun of us just because we have a different history than them. At least we do not bow to the Zionist state of Israel and are not the puppets of Americans.
We, North Africans, also support Palestinians in their fight against the occupation unlike Egyptians who prevented them from getting basic necessities such as food by blocking access to the tunnels. Let us not forget that the agression on Gaza in December happened with the belssing of Egypt.
It's too bad Egyptians don't have the same passion when it comes to politics.
I just hope my fellow Algerians will not get down to the same level as them and will not resort to any violence now that they won.

Decency or decadency? A proofreader's nightmare!
To the author, a work plagued by grammatical, syntax and orthographical mistakes loses its value especially when the mistakes lead to the opposite of what you meant to say. Use spellchecker next time and have the article proofread by someone else.
Some commentary is so low and of such poor taste and quality it is a worthless effort to discuss. Except for some meaningful contributions, there is a complete disregard for the standards of respect, civility and intellectual maturity in favor of stereotypes and utterly ignorant and uneducated comments. Alas some people will never change their attitudes or learn from those who are better than them.

I believe the real meaning behind this are the frustrations of all the people in the Arab world.
The fact that Arabs cannot express their opinions, nor they can live healthy, productive lives create deep psycholgical wounds that can lead to this type of behaviour.
I am sure they wish they could all come together and beat the s... out of governement officials in their respective countries.

The game itself and the qualification to the world cup is being really used to its full extent by both goverments in both countries to divert attentions from real problems with unemployment, lack of health care, proper housing ...etc. It is easy to rally everyone around such a "useless" game. It is a PROPAGANDA.
An ideal scenario of the players from both teams simply get together and play the game without scoring a goal in purpose even if going to penalty kicks.

Algeria wants to harm morocco
Egypt is and will always be the leader of the Arab world. Algerians just like Moroccans do not have the heart like the Egyptians.
These games are about how much heart you've got not how good player you are.
I am Moroccan and if there is and Arab I would like to represent me in South Africa, I want him to be an Egyptian. Algerians want to harm the territorial integrity of their neighbor, they are obsessed by the king's success, they are copying each and every move he does, except giving Algerian women and Amazigh more freedom like he did.
I don't care about Housni Mubarak but i do think that Egyptians will represent the Arabs much better. The Algerians are too selfish to care about the Arab world, they consider themselves more French which is ridiculous , wanting to harm Morocco for 37 years even after we helped them gain their independence.
Long live the people of Egypt.
When Bouteflika stops harassing Morocco then, we will cheer the Algerians.

BTW, Bouteflika can give this Aminatou a passport to go curse and abuse Morocco all over.

What annoys me in all of this is not what the Egyptian hooligans did, after all they just lived up to their reputation, but the fact that the Egyptian media and government are doing everything in their power to make it seem as though the Algerians did it to themselves is wrong no matter how you cut it.

To add insults to injuries, their media and most of their Arabic speaking people (20th century illiterates), think that by making funny remarks about the Berber ancestry of the North Africans, they are scoring points.

Have a look at this video to see how the Algerian supporters, many of whom children and women, were treated after the match. Can you imagine what would of happened if the Egyptians lost?

Egypt never supported the Polisario, Moroccan are hypocrites supporting the Algerian who wants us harmed. Egypt supported Morocco since day one and always remembers that Morocco is one of the reason they recuperated their land from the Israelis, the Algerians however never appreciated what Morocco did for them when they were still colonized by the French.

Algeria is the enemy, Egypt is not. Let's be honest with ourselves.

It's not all about the Egyptians
It's pointless to deny an attack on the bus by some Egyptians on the streets but the question is how serious was the attack and how much was of it amplified by theatrics of the Algerian team? Egypt did not deny the attack but they said it was just some insults and a couple of small stones thrown on the bus with no harm done, then the Algerians retaliated by breaking the windows from inside the bus to respond to the attacks or because they were afraid or just because they wanted to make matters seem bigger than they were and take advantage from being victims. Videos on Youtube show very clearly a smashed window curved to the outside of the bus and the Algerian players are clearly seen breaking some windows and running and shouting in the middle of the bus. See the videos and make up your own mind. But it's clearly not all about the Egyptians. I don't doubt Egypt started "something" but it was a brawl from both sides.
