 Jamal Elabiad

Recently, I was a member of a committee whose job was testing the competence of two novice teachers of English. The committee consisted of the supervisor and two teachers, myself included. This is the first time I have been selected for this duty.

Soon after receiving the invite from the delegation of the ministry of education, I started gathering information on how to judge whether a teacher is competent or not. My sources were Mr. Google and some English language teaching ( ELT) books I xeroxed when I was a teacher trainee at Meknes pedagogic center.

The Art of Afghan Translators and Interpreters E-mail
SPOTLIGHT

The work of translators and interpreters in Afghanistan is critical to the mission.  The art of translation is a bridge, a link, a path – but also a mirror between two individuals, groups, communities, and governments. After the terrorist attacks of 9/11, the important mission of the U.S. Army was to destroy the Al-Qaida network, eliminate terrorist elements, and create an atmosphere conducive to peace and democracy.  Translators and interpreters aide the U.S. Army: it is an attempt to bring opportunity to the Afghan people and pave the way for a better future for the war-stricken nation.

Halloween in Russia or Russian-Halloween in America E-mail

Halloween in Russia is not quite the same as it is in the United States. You will not see gleeful kids trick-or-treating on the Moscow streets – simply because Halloween is not celebrated among children in Russia. The holiday, originally brought to North America from Ireland, found its way into Russian night clubs about eight to ten years ago. Halloween remains new for the majority of Russian society, yet signs show that the holiday is gaining popularity among young adults. But those are Russians in Russia, how do Russian-Americans celebrate Halloween?

Washington - The 4th annual convention of the Moroccan American Coalition (MAC), held over last weekend under the theme "Connect, Inspire, Grow", wrapped up late Sunday in Washington, in an optimistic tone, coupled with a clear will to unite the voice of the Moroccan-American community.
Aware that unity is strength, the organizers of the two-day meeting, as well as participants from different regions of the U.S., underscored the importance of endeavouring to better know one another and to make efforts in a context of alliance.Aziz El Madi, co-director of the Boston-based "Volunteer Morocco" association, thinks the 4th MAC Convention is an "important" initiative, and believes the coalition should include other Moroccan associations.

challenges in Ethnic communities Outreach E-mail

Working with the ethnic media in the U.S. might not be easy. Let’s say you want to send out a press release to Russian American media. You follow all the mainstream Public Relations (PR) rules, but there is no result. Why? Because multicultural PR requires a distinct knowledge. Ethnic advertising agencies, like Allied Media Corp., are the perfect choice for multicultural outreach because such specialized marketers work with these media everyday and understand the difference between mainstream and ethnic PR.

Washington, DC – Seven year old Faatimah and twelve year old Sakina Musa are back in school.  But instead of getting on a bus every morning and traveling to a school building, they simply turn on their computers from home and “log-on” to school.

Both girls are enrolled in an online school that allows them to receive a complete education from their home, under the guidance of their mother and with support from “virtual” teachers.  It’s a new trend in education that is becoming increasingly popular with families across the country.

The team has several eye surgeons who will perform many complex eye surgeries during their visit.   There are many ways you can help. US Census 2010 & Moroccan Americans E-mail
By Helen Samhan /  August 6, 2009
In less than a year, the nation will conduct its once-a-decade census of the U.S. population. The 2010 Census will ask just ten basic questions about each household—like the name, age, gender, and race of each person living there. Arab Americans, who are not a legally recognized racial or ethnic minority, have no “box” to check and some have suggested we should boycott the Census for that reason. This begs the questions: where do we fit and why should we care?

The creative process: A look into how IT gets done E-mail

Earlier this week, I went up to New York City to show our rough cuts to our client.  For someone in the marketing industry, this is a pretty standard process in ANY campaign.  That being said, I don’t know how many people from the industry are actually reading this blog, so I thought it might be a fun to give everyone some insight into what takes place when dealing with an outreach marketing campaign.

Now, I could go over the whole campaign, beginning to end.  I could go over the strategic planning for our media plan, the internal logistics of our day to day operations, or the process our PR goes through when pitching a story to the media.  That would be very informative but let’s be honest, the most fun part of any marketing campaign is what you see on TV, a newspaper, the internet; the CREATIVE.

The Beginning

So I’m sitting here, wondering what I should blog about, wondering what innovative concept I can come up with in order make my mark in the social media arena.  I’m wondering if there is any point to wondering these things at all until I realize that being INNOVATIVE doesn’t mean coming up with a new CONCEPT, but rather an angle or idea that can make ANY concept more effective.

Social Media matters E-mail

What is Social Media?  Why does Social Media matter?  Where do I fit in?  These are some of the questions constantly being asked in offices and cubicles around the country and around the world every day.  In actuality, the questions are more direct and less casual; driven by fear many ask: but what’s our ROI?  Social Media, the buzz word, has a safe place among serious integrated marketing campaigns, so let’s be clear about what we’re talking about.  Social Media or New Media is a conversation that bridges the divide between a social cause and an activist, a product and a consumer, or a tag-line and a consumer.  Marsha Lindsay wrote a nice piece on social media about the evolving conversation economy.

Immigration: The Russians Are Coming! E-mail

According to some Russian newspapers, there is currently a new Russian emigration wave to the West, specifically to Europe, Canada and the U.S. This wave is also known as “quiet emigration.” Because of the economical crisis in Russia, tens of thousands of managers, entrepreneurs and middle class professionals lose their jobs and seek employment abroad.

There were four major waves of Russian immigration to the US. The first one started in 1917, after the October Revolution, which consisted of mainly political immigrants escaping the Bolsheviks. The second wave was in late 1940’s, after World War II. The third wave took place in the 1970’s when hundreds of thousands Russian Jews emigrated as political refugees. The most recent and fourth major wave came in the 1990’s after the fall of the Soviet Union.

With the publication of Peter Francese’s white paper, there has been much talk about the 2010 Census and its results affecting the marketing world. Studies indicate that this changing face will morph from “Consumer Joe” to one that is impossible to define as a general market.

Francese’s findings indicate that in the nation’s 10 largest cities, “no racial or ethnic category describes a majority of the population.”

The U.S. Census Bureau is seeking to partner with Russian American organizations to increase participation of hard-to-reach Russian communities for the 2010 Census count. Since 1790, the United States government has conducted a census every ten years in order to count the full population in the United States. The 2010 Census will mark the 23rd census of the U.S. It is a constitutional right of all U.S. residents to participate in the census.

September 11: Increasing Discriminations & Needs E-mail

Washington -   September 11, marked not only the worst attack ever on US soil, but also the beginning of two controversies. First is the United State’s global “War on Terror” as it was called by the Bush administration. Next, being the undeniable increase of discrimination in the United States towards those from (and those perceived to be from) the Arab, Muslim, Sikh and South-Asian American communities. To make things worse, these two issues directly clash with one another:
