Bashing Royal Air Maroc Not A Solution
- M. CHTAINI
- 09/18/10
San Francisco / Morocco Board News Service ----Royal Air Maroc’s North American market, in spite of the time of crisis for the industry, is navigating on a profitable track; profitability is a goal which many airlines are attempting to reach and maintain. To be more specific, RAM’s Casablanca-New York route is profitable not because of alleged predatory pricing imposed by the airline but because of the steady demand in this market. Aside from the Moroccan demand for this CASA-NY route, there is an appreciable African demand because Casablanca is a hub for African travelers.
Ticket prices are not uniform; tickets for some classes within the flight are provided at lower prices when available and purchased on time. As it has become a rule for all airlines if the lower cost classes are sold then the remaining classes are available at a higher price up to the Y class price. Airlines do not just make prices up as they please for different markets and nor does Royal Air Maroc. There are many factors which influence price.
Comparing Turkish Airline’s $650 to RAM’s $1200 has prompted me to investigate the validity of this comparison and what causes this almost double price differential. I discovered that the low cost class for these airlines, if purchased on time, is only $100 difference, with Turkish Airline’s NY-Istanbul fare at $650 and RAM’s NY-Casablanca fare at $750. But price comparisons between RAM and Turkish Airlines are unfair. Turkish Airlines, which code shares with United Airlines, has over 5 flights daily between Chicago-Istanbul and New York-Istanbul alone and has a US Turkish population of 500,000 people and 700,000 US tourists who visit Turkey annually. It is no surprise that prices for the New York-Istanbul route are lower than for the New York-Casablanca route. It is unfair to compare prices in this instance.
By December 15, RAM is going to add two flights per week. With a schedule of more than 7 flights per week, the number of low cost fares should increase. These two extra RAM flights will meet the increasing African passengers’ demand. The addition of these two flights weekly will simplify flight connections to other African capitals for RAM’s African passengers.
Furthermore, RAM will be acquiring 5 new Boeing 787 Dream Liners. This heavy investment for these types of planes will contribute to the modernization of RAM’s fleet and will allow RAM to schedule more frequent flights, making this route more competitive and attractive to the entry of other companies, dealing a death blow to any false assumption of a RAM monopoly.
Vilifying Royal Air Maroc in articles is not going to result in lower prices. However; we can analyze whether there is any merit to the RAM-bashing by some of the Moroccans residing in the USA. What are their complaints? (1) High prices, (2) Poor service, (3) Unprofessional staff. Let’s examine these in turn.
1. High Prices
The High Prices issue is going to require Moroccans of good will residing in the US to resolve. Fortunately, a foundation for resolving the RAM high price problem exists. It is the viable regional Moroccan American Associations all over the United States. Most, if not all, the Moroccans who belong to these regional associations visit Morocco at least once a year. These visits are planned in advance because of work and school responsibilities.
The second factor, in addition to planning, is organizing with other members of the community association to identify all those who will be traveling to Morocco within a year’s period so that one can assess how many people will be traveling during the identified year. This number will give negotiating strength in price reduction with RAM. Many of us Moroccans residing in the USA no matter how capricious we are towards our own RAM still fly with RAM on our way to Morocco. Why not do it in a planned, organized manner so that we all can benefit by our sheer number from price reductions?
The third factor is that there are several Moroccan-owned travel agencies and tour operations in the USA which deal directly with RAM in a win win situation in their business dealings. Each Moroccan American Regional Association should identify such a travel agency or tour operator to work with on this important project. The selected agency or tour operator should cooperate with the Moroccan American Associations in his region to develop a list of potential passengers who will travel to Morocco within the year. Once the number of passengers on the list reaches 1,000, the travel agent or tour operator can make arrangements from a position of strength with RAM to obtain lower prices for the participants.
If we do our homework and reach or surpass RAM’s 1,000-passenger benchmark, I challenge anyone who will tell me that RAM will not reduce prices substantially and begin to court us as viable partners. We will ally ourselves with the selected travel agency or tour operator who looks out for our interest and we will insure that they get paid for their service while reducing the cost of travel all around.
As to those members of the Moroccan community in the US who experienced what appeared to them as price gouging and who are criticizing RAM on the high price issue, you have been heard left and right and up and down; let us embark on constructive criticism and change our attitude and plan and organize so that we can make RAM care about us and work with us as it is supposed to do.
Your criticism, no doubt, has been read and understood by the two Ministers, the President Director General of Royal Air Maroc and its Board of Directors and its private and public share holders especially as it relates to high prices. When criticism is supported by a well-planned and organized proposal which provides RAM with thousands of Moroccans residing in the US as a block of passengers, all of the above mentioned entities will make sure that RAM welcomes as it should this planned and organized group of passengers as a serious clientele to respect. If criticism fails to propose a solution, I doubt things will change.
What I read in the criticism is the need for the respect of what I would call our “Moroccanism” which we cannot shake off in spite of our Americanization. Work with your Regional Moroccan American Association and plan and organize and deliver the goods so that we all can benefit from a new positive relationship with RAM. Come on, Moroccans! We are in America and we like to visit home as often as possible, we can plan and organize and make this project happen. There is no need for excuses! Let us do it because we can. The lower the RAM airfare prices the more frequent visits we can make to Morocco and allow our families to visit us.
2. Poor Service
Service is a tough one. I know that we Moroccans feel at home when we are in Royal Air Maroc, but we should not confuse between being home and being on an airline as a passenger. We do not make that confusion when we are on another airline. We carry this attitude too far when we view the stewards and the air hostesses as servants.
I personally have known 3 different generations of RAM stewards and hostesses. Many of them are my friends. I resent seeing them mistreated by passengers when I am flying with RAM. I have seen passengers who were abusive and insulting without respect for themselves, the crew and the other passengers. We should all condemn abusive treatment of RAM’s well-trained, well-educated, multi-lingual stewards and hostesses. The kind of abuse I’ve seen would get a passenger arrested upon arrival on another airline. But RAM’s cabin crew is forgiving and ignores rudeness from impolite passengers.
These rude passengers may not know that the responsibility of the cabin crew and the pilot and his team is, first and foremost, the safety of the passengers. Carrying safely the passenger to destination is number one responsibility. While the cabin crew does its best to service all the passengers, some passengers are very obnoxious. Especially when they ask for more wine during the meal and they cannot handle alcohol. Some passengers subject the hostesses to harassment; need I say more.
Royal Air Maroc serves meat, fish and chicken based meals; they even serve Kosher and special diet meals such as vegetarian or fruit ones if ordered in advance. I have flown on RAM with my family in coach, business and first class since RAM started flying to New York; the service has always been up to par.
RAM is known to be a family airline because of the demographic composition of the Moroccan community overseas. Travelers tend to be young couples traveling with children or older Moroccans visiting their children in America. The needs of passengers with children and grandparents visiting America for the first time are well served by the RAM cabin crews. I witnessed this on many occasions while flying back and forth from Casablanca to New York. The stewards and hostesses took care of the elderly and children as if they were taking care of their own parents and children. This Moroccan cultural behavior surpasses the call of duty.
I question the complaints of “poor service.” In my more than 200 flights with RAM since it started flying to New York, the passengers of the flights I was on were always provided service which ranks from good to excellent. No doubt travel difficulties pop up every now and then considering the number of flights and the volume of passengers. When they do, I expect we will hear about them in the Morocco Board News.
3. Unprofessional Staff
The allegation that RAM staff is unprofessional is not supported in my experience and is extremely damaging to the dignity of RAM employees. It is unclear what measuring stick is being applied to evaluate professionalism at RAM. As a frequent passenger, the first RAM professional evaluation which comes to my mind is the airline’s safety record, which is unblemished. We pray to God that it will continue as such. RAM’s pilots and their crews are highly professional and could be hired by any other airline, and the same is true of the cabin crews.
High level management at RAM has changed many times because of different political and policy issues, but the core mid-management which makes RAM function and fly rain or shine is a highly professional staff which could make any airline function and fly anywhere in the world.
Then who is left? The General Manager for North America and the Station Manager at JFK, who have changed many times, are our direct contact in the USA. We all have known them. The RAM General Managers for North America that I have known have always been professional in the execution of their responsibility. They were competent and did their work in a transparent manner with integrity as does the current General Manager for North America. Most of the General Managers for North America were young men who were highly educated, spoke at least 5 languages, and were task driven. They cooperated with Moroccan-owned travel agencies and tour operations in America as does the current General Manager for North America.
We all know the present JFK RAM Station Manager, his assistant and their colleagues. They have always been helpful to RAM passengers. I always found them to be very professional whenever I traveled and I am sure many other passengers would agree.
4. Problems confronted by all airlines
Delays in departure, sitting in the tarmac for hours in the plane are problems confronting all airlines. Luggage being misplaced or arriving late or even lost happens on all airlines. Security and safety delays happen to all airlines. Flight cancellations happen on all airlines. These are not problems that apply to RAM alone.
5. Conclusion
It is easy to bash RAM for personal and idiosyncratic reasons. If criticism is honestly made to improve RAM’s performance, no one will disapprove of it especially when it is made under a civil freedom of expression. When it is constructive criticism everyone listens, but when it is just criticism for the sake of criticism, spare me from your refusenik attitude.

Customer Service —

When it comes to customer service RAM staff is awful including the supervisors, they're never around.
I understand there will alwys be tough customers to deal with
Especially those who get toxicated during the flight.
However the staff should always maintain their
Professionalis & manners.
Too bad passengers pay airline prices for greyhound experience.

Your are painting an idyllic picture of Royal Air Maroc which by the way is far from reality!!!!! Your opinion seems biased since you admit to have many accointances among Royal Air Maroc crew Members !!!! I quote : "I personally have known 3 different generations of RAM stewards and hostesses. Many of them are my friends". Such an answer will let Readers dubitative. Concerning the service, let me tell you that it has deteriorated for decades ! Stop wearing blinkers, for the sake of our country, passeng ers are not naive, the image driven is a shame . Criticisms are good in some degree to force the staff to transcend themselves and give back to Royal Air Maroc its AURA

So basically this guy is saying that you have been lying about RAM's shortcomings and that the problem is with the passengers, not the company. Thank you very much -- next.

Are we talking about the same airline? —

Kudos to Mr Chtaini for his heartfelt support of the RAM. Although I must confess that I am more skeptical than ever about our national carrier. Appealing to our sense of patriotism regarding the dysfunctional company tends to fall flat.
I much would have preferred that an actual Manager from the RAM would post on this board. Like everybody knows, every story has two sides. I am certain than all of us would love to hear from the OTHER side. I.e. The RAM.
As for "bashing" the RAM, the frustration has been building for years. One does feel hopeless about improvements occurring anytime soon.

In-flight service —
2010-09-18 04:26
I've flown RAM maybe two dozen times, mainly JFK-CMN, but also from Europe to Casa a few times. The in-flight service has often been very good, but at other times it's been deplorable. A Moroccan friend said his theory is that many of the flight attendants are from privileged families and therefore have trouble seeing themselves functioning as waitresses and waiters on an airplane. Could this be part of the inconsistency in RAM's service across the board?

Refusenik, bottom line it’s an airline that’s subsidized by the government. And if they go private I will promise you chapter 11

I think the author of this article flies first class ONLY! I live in NY and I know a lot of people who prefer to pay more money and to fly to Europe then to Casablanca, rather than flying with RAM.

Hmmm... A different experience for me I guess —
2010-09-18 12:11
Ok, the crazy prices part is absolutely true! Service... Hmmm... Honestly, the 3 times I flew with RAM were not bad at all, except for some wonderful fellow Moroccans who had questionable behaviors:
1- A lady from Casa, residing in Texas took over another passenger's spot and put her suitcase where he was about to put his, claiming it was hers! The guy was apologetic too, although the spot she took was 5 rows behind where she sat and right above his seat. Some women are skilled at getting people uncomfortable, acting as if they owned the place. Then she cussed a little and got fussy because she had gotten tired on her flight from Texas to NYC. Mind you I had flown from LA, so yeah! Whatever!
2- A "wise" man flying with us gave attitude to an African couple. Clearly, we can mask it all we want, but can't deny we Moroccans are racist unfortunately!
3- Another not so wise man started hitting on me... and a variation of this event: another not so wise man was hitting on a married young Moroccan woman (don't jump to conclusions, I am not denouncing him out of jealousy!)
Okay, so back to service! I've had great service with la RAM from NYC to CMN... One time, from Madrid or Paris (can't recall) the service was less than stellar: I requested water and it took a while, but that's something I've encountered with Virgin Atlantic, Delta and others, so nothing out of the ordinary!
I prefer the individual TV screens with Air France, the low-cost prices with Iberia, but overall, I cannot complain much about RAM, except for the pricing issue, which was competitive with Air France for New Year's just 2 weeks ago, and sky rocketed last week! So yeah, sorry, but my patriotism is not strong enough for me to disburse an extra 350 bucks for a ticket when I can fly Air France!

What about customer service? —
2010-09-18 15:13
I've been flying Iberia for many years now. Much cheaper and much better service. I don't agree that RAM prices are competitive at all, but I would have been willing to pay more for the convenience if the service was halfway decent. Unfortunately, RAM Flight attendants refuse to realize that their job is to serve the passengers including the waiter/waitress part. It is not true that they come from privileged families as someone suggested; in fact it may be the opposite that makes most of them think that being a Flight Attendant is somehow special.

RAM is a joke, and anybody defending RAM is a liar, criminal or both. —
2010-09-18 16:02
RAM is a pretty horrible airline. Lets be real for a second. The issue is not that RAM is a sub standard airline; anyone who has ever flown RAM, author and other liars not withstanding, knows that RAM offers poor in flight service, is almost never on time, and customer care that is non existent and cabin crew that specialize in 5 finger discounts.
The real issue for me is that RAM is partly owned by the Moroccan people. The issue for me is that RAM is subsidized with tax money that is provided by the Moroccan tax payer. The issue for me is that RAM gets a monopoly on an incredibly lucrative route. The issue for me is that the management of RAM reads like a who's who of the most powerful affluent families in Morocco. RAM Defines Nepotism. RAM is the perfect example of what is wrong with Morocco.
The fact that Mr. Chtaini can put forth this creative representation of reality in some other dimension is just further evidence that putting lipstick on a pig does not change the, "oink" to a, "moo". RAM is Ugly. RAM is part of the reason that although Morocco, South Korea and Spain had the same GDP per Capitas back in the 1960's, Morocco is the only one that is still a true third world nation.
Mr. Chaitani, you seem to really like RAM, no problem, if they are able to survive in a fair, competitive market, wonderful... but in their current state, with their bloated salaries for useless executives and self important pilots and stewardesses... you could not even find a buyer!!!
RAM, Maroc Telecom, Redal and Bank al Maghreb, living examples of third world mentalities at work. Together they keep a country hostage.

to Answer Raoul I posted my point of view which explains the flight attendants inefficiency on board as far as the service quality is concerned in the other topic concerning RAM. In the Department in charge of the flight attendants, SOME hostesses who don t have any academic level such as the General Certificate, not even the profil to manage , have succeeded rising through the ranks in a total lack of transparency to cumulate the titles of instructors and hostess manager !!!!!These hostesses(super visors)more preoccupied in choosing the profitable flights (in terms of money) are mainly interested in VIP flights allowing them not only to earn more money but also to enlarge the list of names in their phone cells. I remember one of them had got her cell phone stolen. She was driven mad and called the thief while a phone was still operating and supplicated him to sell her the memory card at any cost, no matter the price . This same hostess was sick at the time of the H1N1 flue pandemy.Though she was feverish, she flew without caring about contaminating the VIP and people on board, not even having in mind that probably she could have endangered AN immuno deficient passenger. How do you expect to have a decent customer service when, unfortunatly the new generation faces such a situation of an ineffIcient staff with no scrupules but in the head office good papers. Such a situation, engen ders inevitably frustration and disgust???

Now here is an idea we should all subscribe to and ultimately BENEFIT FROM. —
2010-09-18 23:39
There is nothing satanic about Mr. Chtaini’s article… Sorry about the lame joke – I couldn’t resist.
Kidding aside, I think Mr. Chtaini has put forward a set of ideas we all should embrace… He suggested we register with or belong to our respective regional Moroccan American Associations, Moroccan Operated Travel Agencies or Tour Operators to gather our voices and speak as one. This would certainly give us the leverage and buying power we need to negotiate lower prices.
La RAM does not perceive”indivi dual” complaints as a serious threat. It has no incentive to negotiate with each every single individual… However, if we collectively form a coallition of 1,000 or more passengers and then threaten to take our busniness elsewhere if our concerns are not addressed, RAM would have no choice but to listen and offer concessions to maintain our business.
I don’t know where these Moroccan American Associations are and I am hopping Mr. Chtaini would share them with us. I would sign up in a New York Minute.

There is no doubt that RAM has let its clients down on numerous occasions. Service on board is consistently lousy and prices unjustified. We can talk all we want, at the end of the day the Moroccan customer and others have to be respected for any change to take hold. This is what it boils down to : respect. Action speaks louder than words; we'll see what RAM is ready to do next. In the mean time, as someone who has stuck with RAM over the years up until very recently despite the fact that they sucked big time, my advice is to fly with others. For Iberia to be better than RAM is a new low that well connected pampered 40-50 year old "kids" (who are busy hiring the kids of kids, at RAM have to get their derriere out of. Papa and Maman will not get you out of this one.

Economic cost analysis and the usual apologist stance of the RAM does not answer the fundamental question —
2010-09-19 00:33
Mustapha,
Your analysis of cost and economic assessment of supply and demand does little to answer why when it comes of customer services the RAM and many African Airlines are the worst. Have you have flown from anywhere (I mean anywhere) with Air Algerie or Royal Air Maroc? God help us, I might as well be taking those old patched up with holes on the floor and Chickens passenger seat buses that takes 14 hours from Fes to Rabat by going through all the God foresaken villages or Douars. And beleive me I have done it many times during the 1980's, just to see how our public (private) transportation work. What an anthopological discovery?.
Casablanca-NY airline connection got worse in recent ONLY PARTIALLY because there are now a lot more Moroccans living in the US. It is certainly not the sole factor that has put the RAM services to become second class and in utter decline. I think all these complains, from either the passagers as well as the RAM management, are symptoms of a much deeper cultural and psycho-patholog ical problems. Problems that are symptomatic of lack of respect for the others. I would say even the utter contempt of the other who is not a member of your clan, tribe, region, or family. It is a big problem that touches on how we behave towards one another in Morocco or all Arab countries for that matter. But it is also how rational human being behave and speak.
I think if the RAM management shows apathy or no responses to the passengers demands it is because of this culture of "dog eats dog mentality". The passengers should also shut up, because they most often speak, order things and act as if they are taking an old bus from Fez to Rabat. These same passangers would have acted and behaved in the same way the management behave if they were put in the position of having to run an Airline. I am afraid to say that they will behave as anyone in those old patched up buses from Fez to Rabat. What is missing in RAM NY-Casablanca flight is to allow people to bring chickens (I am of course kidding here), but let us be real, have you seen what people try to get into the airlines. I mean some cases are beyond comprehension and reason, as if they are moving their whole house like (un demenagement). What is this? and the children... Oh my God...
All of these people (management and passengers) come from, and have grown up and learned the same thing which is to rely on only on yourself because the world out there is out to get them. It is a culture of suspiscion and hatred even self-hatred for being put down by someone a bit higher in the hierarchy. ANd God knows what a symbolic powerful hierarchy there is.
How can people of this chaotic culture be able to run an Airline efficiently and rationally with rules and regulations and an understanding of the meanings of there norms? It will only be worse, because there is a big lag. I mean a big big cultural lag that seems to get even worse despite the talks of respect for each other and equality under God. A lag between the way we moroccan think, feel and act and the outside world of modernity and rationality. There is a big catch up to do than ever before. But I am not sure if we ever be able to shorten this gap.
In fact, I predict that the RAM will be able to bypass the problem (as is always the case in Morocco in every problem solving process) by keeping a second class Airline flights to ordinary workers with first class seats of course, but also create another nice and polished connections to Casablanca from NY to foreign tourists, dignitaries and those Moroccans elites passangers. Morocco is very conscious of its image to the outside world. What a nice solution. A solution that evades the real cultural problem of "je m'en fou, apres moi le deluge"... What a moroccan way to deny the issue...

What a moroccan way to deny the issue...

Blame the victim, first, and always. —
2010-09-19 01:44
I noticed that quite few writers on this board try to put the blame squarely on the passengers shoulders.
Moroccans did not invent rowdiness on airplanes! I, in no way condone the unbecoming behavior of some of my compatriots, and I strongly believe that they are a minuscule minority. Contrary to what had been suggested in few postings here,
Maybe, just maybe people are expressing their frustration about the unreasonably high prices, and the certitude that the service will SUCK, and the misery will last until we fall into the welcoming arms of our loved one upon our arrival!

false comparison —
2010-09-19 08:27
"Turkish Airlines, which code shares with United Airlines, has over 5 flights daily between Chicago-Istanbu l and New York-Istanbul alone..."
Where do they get there information? Turkish Airlines (THY) operates only two (2) flights from Turkey to the U.S. of A.; Ist-Jfk & Ist-Ord
If you combine all connection possibilities through their Star Alliance partnerships they have may more "flights" though those are actually operated by several DIFFERENT airlines. Just thought that if a comparison is to be made, the baseline should at least be accurate.

Mr. Chtaini article is without a doubts biased. What's more troubling in my mind is that articles like these are considered "journalism". On other more important issues, we all have blamed the media for feeding us more than just the facts, due to their political affiliation. This is no different.
only genuine articles worth discussing should be posted here. Authors should present the facts and let bloggers debate and discuss. I respect everyone's opinion and try not to convince or force my opinion on others.
Issues with La RAM exist and need to be resolved. This article is not really worth reading.

What you talkin' about Mostafa? —
2010-09-19 13:20
Well, it sounds like Si Mostafa is connected to RAM. As Mr. Traibi wrote, his analysis suggests that all who expressed displeasure with our national airlines are simply lying.
No one is obligated to travel with RAM. There are plenty of other carriers offering better service and lower prices. Going through Europe makes sense to most of us except if you live in NY. Why not use other airlines. When the numbers decline RAM will be forced to review their pricing and customer service policies.
You have other choices. Use other airlines.

ANOTHER PROPAGANDA fo the good of RAM —
2010-09-19 21:17
We should do our home work in planning, organizing with RAM agencies and other members of the community association to identify all those who will be traveling to Morocco within a year’s period so that one can assess how many people will be traveling during the identified year??????????? ?? wooooowwwwwwwww wwwwwww where on this earth any nation has done this before with their airlines? GIVE me a brake. GROW UP. wake up to the reality Mr. MOSTAFA? are you of those who has relatives working for RAM and traveling for Free? why should we do all these nonsense? don't they know the number of travelers with RAM per year? We demand to lower price and with no excuse. How can you explain to me this: Many times I traveled with US airways, Delta,....from with 600 miles from NY to Europe for less than 500$ round trip. Why should we pay 1200 from NY to casa add to that another fees to get to JFK if we live far from it? why???????????? ?????????

We are responsible for what RAM is doing to Us. —
2010-09-19 21:51
Yes brothers and sisters, we are responsible for what RAM is doing to us. Same thing here in Canada as Europe; All of us are complaining about RAM, everyone wants this situation to be changed but without acting!!! How? I don't know. On 20/08/2010; I posted a petition, asking Moroccan brothers and sisters to sign it, to request Air Canada and Air Transat to open a new line MONTREAL- CASABLANCA, I swear, I send the petition link - 8028.lapetition.be/ - to more than 1400 people and I posted in Forum called erableatlas.superforum.fr/ under title AIR CANADA: MONTREAL - CASABLANCA and it has been read by 1236 people. Do you how many people sign the petition? 294 people (from Morocco, Canada, USA and 1 person from France because she has a family members live in Canada and she knows How mush we are suffering here in North America.
So, to change any situation, we should act not just complain; Please sign the petition on your name and your family members name and validate it from your email, and send it to your friends to do something.
Thanks,
May ALLAH bless us.

Collective Action Problem —
2010-09-19 22:54
Here is a concrete case where a managable group of Moroccans (in the thousand), with the same interest and objective (improving services), a single interlocutor (RAM), a place to meet (Internet), and a fairly straightforward course of action (boycott RAM). In other words this is not about mobilizing millions for an uncertain and risky revolution. Yet, no one will take the lead (including myself) to do anything about the problem and RAM will continue to deteriorate and so will other services in Morocco. In the end, we have the services, government, leaders etc... that we "deserve."

Petition?
Petitions do not work in Morocco. Let's be real. Don't dream. Wake up.
Most of you whining about RAM are still flying RAM because you have no choice, you are too afraid to make a change, to take the first step and free you yourself from Labhima and hid gang. Filling out a petition means you still want to fly the friendly skies of LA RAM and you want us to do the work for you.
Petitions are meant for the lazy like you. If you want to make a difference, hit them in their pocket not some freebie petition that will fade as fast as it was created.
Brothers and sisters don't do the western and civilized thing and hope for a change. You know that we are not made for change, we are kamouniyyin, we need to be crashed before you can react.

We can do this, guys – Seriously. —
2010-09-20 05:46
I agree with Casawi’s summation except for the “course of action” part… I don’t want to boycott RAM – at least not yet. What if we follow Mr. Chtaini’s suggestion and form a consortium whereby our airline tickets purchases are combined??? Wouldn’t that be great? Like we used to say in the old country “Lahmia Katghleb Asbaa”… We can tackle one issue at a time, let’s take care of the cost issue first and then deal with the others. This could only be done if we combine our individual purchases into one massive one.
So how about it guys? Are you ready to do this? Aren’t you tired of just complaining without any results? Let’s at least give this a try and see how it goes…

SERIOUS ACTION NEED TO BE TAKEN SOON! —
2010-09-21 01:32
READ WHAT MR. MOSTAPHA IS TALKING ABOUT: I discovered that the low cost class for these airlines, if purchased on time, is only $100 difference, with Turkish Airline’s NY-Istanbul fare at $650 and RAM’s NY-Casablanca fare at $750.
ONLY $100? really? compared to $1200??? and if so! is $100 nothing to you? how about if you have 4 or 6 tickets to purchase? wake up Mr. to the reality! dollar is a dollar. ok? RAM's prices should never exceed $600 per ticket ever. I swear to my Allah that I flew before from NY to europe for less $386 round trip, and I flew for 481& and for 540$ NEVER MORE THAN THIS PRICE. Guys lets put an END to RAM. They hate us and they don't care about us and our children to go to visit our homeland and our belovers. WE hav eto take an action seriously..talk to media here in USA, in Morocco, in europe..everywh ere...talk to students in Moroccan universities..b elive me they can help and they good at it...even les eleves des colleges marocains..tehy are ready for you to take an action...Wassal am

THIS COULD BE THE REASON! —
2010-09-21 01:39
If Moroccans in europe can fly to casa for 50 to 250 euros or less round trip during any season of the year, why can't we Moroccans in USA hard working people fly for less than 650 dollars in any season? or are they better than us? mybe because many of them are taking TONS of euros dial LHRAM / from DRUG fast money to morooccan banks? is this the reason why tickets are cheap from europe to casa? is it because RAM knows that Moroccan europeans are bring them TONS of euros?

During recent weeks and months, I read many articles on RAM, its customer service, and its high prices. In this instance, I noticed the writer was out of touch or the reality and anyone else writing his/her comments. The writer is telling all of us that a monster in nothing but an angel living in a perfect world and everything is ok.
In between the lines, one could detect he is receiving bribe or has high connections within RAM which explains his soft tone like a poet talking highly of his master for better gift otherwise, he is definitely naive.
Moroccan Immigrants in the United are not all educated, well informed, and able to make a lot of money therefore the high level of ignorance and RAM knows all about it. The people of RAM know quiet well how to capitalize on it. They created a monopoly between Casa and NYC for a large market. However, RAM is not the only guilty behind high prices. Moroccan Immigrants owning travel agencies are the ones pushing customer to pay for high prices therefore higher commission. RAM and travel agencies are not in business to look after the travelers’ interest rather their and their only. RAM is a monopoly and travel agencies are using it for their advances. It is a common practice in Europe and the US.
Why we all are in the United Sates? In general, we are here to prosper, success and many other reasons but most importantly to liberate ourselves from what others want us to believe as if we do not have other means to travel to Morocco other than RAM. I would like to help and assist Morocco prosper, however and during the process I cannot let RAM and its officials take a lot money of me ant treat me like a dog. 14 years ago, I decided to spend my money else where and always travel via Europe with longer hours but cheaper and with less hassle.
I could not help my self noticing a lot of comments without any base and any subjectivity. Fingers are pointed in every direction like a fire works leaving behind a bad taste and smoke. Common Sense would dictate for us to look closely to our situation to find ways and other means to travel to Morocco without depending solely on RAM.
RAM is neither going to change anytime soon nor it is going to listen to travelers demands. We should not believe that united travels in North America against RAM are not going to happen and just to be clear. Please do like many of us who invite their parents over or others who prefer to spend the same money to explore the good side of the United State a place we are calling home far from home.
I have seen families coming back from Morocco with bad experiences despite all the efforts and the money spent to make the trip happen for their kids and themselves. RAM is not the only problem travelers face because the trip it self could be a bad decision after all. RAM is no the only airline to be used for a final destination where a person could spend and enjoy a peaceful time.
It is your decision, when are you going to take control of your life therefore your traveling plans.

Do it to me the first TIME SHAME ON YOU, DO IT TO ME A SECOND TIME SHAME ON ME.As a member of the Delta Mileage Club, I flew from Atlanta to NY to Casablanca via RAM= Ny/Casa.What a fiasco for which I paid good money in Business Class.Since, I fly Air France= Atl/Paris/Casa or Atl/London/Casa or Atl/Frankfurt/c asa. Always a good service and my luggage arrive with me. And no MEAN Stewardesses refusing to serve me a drink when I wish to have one.Folks, the decision is yours. You need to hit RAM in the pocket book: writing to the King won't do anything. We all know how Morocco functions. Let s get real.Once RAM start to lose Customers, they will wake up.

Come on guys – let’s not loose this momentum, let’s not let this opportunity slip away. It is time we do something we can all benefit from… We all have a common objective; we all want the same thing; we all want RAM to provide us with a better service at a better price. This is a fairly simple task. We can get-it-done.
Mr. CHTAINI – IF YOU ARE READING THIS, PLEASE LET US KNOW THE NAMES OF THOSE ASSOCIATIONS YOU HAD SUGGESTED WE BELONG TO. I will be the first to sign up and I am sure many would follow.
If we can’t do this simple thing – Organize to seek a common goal of “forcing” RAM to provide us with better services at better prices – then how are we supposed to address and influence all the other much more important issues facing us both here and back home???
So, what do you guys say? Do you want to do this or should we just complain about it again a year from now?

First off thank you for noticing and responding to the anger among RAM passengers. As a Moroccan i am one of many that has issues.
1) High prices: Same time period, same destination..et c. Air France, klm, Luftansa got you beat, either you are competing or your not. I DON'T CARE IF IT IS FAIR OR NOT...that is your problem!!!
2)Customer service:
**I bought tickets throught Delta airlines. Was told in NY JFK by The RAM employee to take the next day flight because RAM overbooked/ oversold the Flight, somehow it is my fault!! After my attorney got in touch with these folks someones else got bumped out unfortunately (Sorry for that but it is my seat and i am taking it, and all other passengers should claim but don't have to fight for what they have paid !!!)
** I have a family of four, in our way back my E-ticket printed in the U.S say seat 23c, 23e, 23d,23f going home and back same seats....I ENDED UP HAVING 16b, 23C, 11F and 22A!!!! i was told by your customer service lady in CMN that i came late that morning !!! COME ON...I BOUGHT SEATS FOR MONTHS AHEAD AND THESE ARE MY SEAT NUMBERS!!!! SO MY 4 YEAR OLD DAUGHTER AND 7 YEAR OLD SON and MY WIFE have to sit all separate BECAUSE OF YOUR LACK OFF SERVICE, OR SHOULD I SAY BECAUSE OF YOUR OUTSTANDING CUSTOMERS SERVICE ...WHOM EVER DAWARE M3A LA RAM HAVE A WINDOW SEAT!!!
I am glad that you have African customers!!! have them...I DESERVE BETTER THAN THIS TREATMENT!!! But i guess i am nobody....so who cares!!!
I WILL NOT FLY RAM EVEN IF YOU PAY ME ...NOR WOULD ANY MOROCCAN IN THEIR RIGHT STATE OF MIND!!
YOU ARE FIGHTING A LOST BATTLE, you may have good intentions as an employee or as a stakeholder to la RAM...but the truth is that You guys don't need us and we don't need you HAMDOU ALLAH...keep doing what you guys do ...and we do what we have to do!!!
P.S. that same plane that got us to NY JFK...had DUCK TAPE on the lever of the overhead luggage ....how embarrassing !!! I really tried to look as small as i could in front of my wife and kids.... i didn't have any logical explanation to give them....That is in a nut shell la RAM.
I was abused by LA RAM practices both in flight and inland...some flights were ok and most were bad. Buying new airplanes and creating new lines can't do you good, take care of your folks and train them will do you good... At la RAM you can't give what you don't have (Professionalis m ,civism and the list is long) because you don't have it SIR.
Another point, to quote you from the above text:"What I read in the criticism is the need for the respect of what I would call our “Moroccanism” which we cannot shake off in spite of our Americanization"
Really ...That is all you read from YOUR customers complaints!!! i felt bad hearing some stories so bad that i didn't want to share mine...but you should hear it now and APOLOGIZE too!!
The truth is La RAM will keep increasing their prices, because they lost US as customers and will keep loosing Market shares!!
La RAM used to save me a few hours ...5 hours tops...but it isn't worth the service i get nor the price i pay...so i am flying in other airlines...and will NEVER FLIGHT LA RAM.... there is nothing National, or less Moroccan about me taking another airline .... I am a Proud Moroccan and because of that, I WILL NOT SUPPORT A COMPANY THAT DOESN'T SUPPORT ME.
either you fix your mistakes and hope WE change our minds, or update your Resume and with a lot of training and luck you may land a job with Some regional airline.
This is a new generation of Morocco/America ns and i will tell you this, if it wasn't for US RME and our wire transfers, you wouldn't have RAM...

Don't waste your time...save your money —

Stop wasting your time: USE A DIFFERENT AIRLINE COMPANY.
My small family and I are travelling to Morocco next month via Paris;we are saving over $400 between the 3 of us by not flying with the RAM...and yes we are making our trip few hours longer.
We can bring down the RAM one passenger at a time.
Try a different route to Casa and see for yourself.

Vive Air France —

I like the fact the la ram lands in casablanca at 7:30 in the morning that's one day extra for me. the other airlines lands very late in the afternoon, that's 1 day of my trip that i cannot afford to lose.
What I do not like about la ram is that they have the dirtiest planes in the planet.
They are so dirty that when you touch the seats they feel sticky with la3fan and germs. Basically the day or 2 I gain with flying la ram , i spend it in bed fighting all the germs that i inhaled and touched in la ram planes.
The 100 bucks (by 4) extra does not bother me much, I just buy less presents that no one likes anyway. They want you to bring them Cartier, Armani, and Hugo Boss stuff.
As I cannot handle la3fan, I decided to use Air France. It's like another world out there. If I were have a choice i would rent and live in Air France. La France c'est savoir vivre. Vive la France, la liberte' et la fraternite'.
For the patriots out there who still want to use the service of la ram, I say, you make you choice you live with it, don't whine, instead have some red wine. The little bottle that they give you in la ram planes where you see people asking for more to get drunk and become routy and nasty.

COMMENT_TITLE_R E Bashing Royal Air Maroc Not A Solution —

Wa si Mostapha yehdik allah. Your eloquently written piece might work for someone who has never been on a plane.
How about a flight from Chicago-Madrid less than 600 in low season?
That's not a fair comparison, I know. Well let me tell you what's not fair: a MONOPOLY.
COMPETITION and privatization of la RAM is the solution. La RAM, its executives, and staff do not answer to the Moroccan tax payer and that’s why don’t care. I don’t think they can even go bankrupt. If the design of the company is flawed how do we expect them to offer good products and services? My dear Hassan, your idea of collective bargaining is good, but the problem here is not only the high prices. It is the service offered my friend. And the service can only be improved by outside competition.
We will gladly pay higher prices to fly with Moroccan airlines. But with that we expect good service. Unfortunately, la RAM can not deliver, simple as that. And that’s why la RAM is not on my check list when I am booking a ticket to Morocco.

Yes blame us for la RAM's woes —
2010-09-24 17:40
So the way to deal with la RAM passenger complaints is to turn around and attack the passengers for not behaving themselves and causing the problems. Huh???? Even this is offensive to the Moroccan community living in North America. First, they have to deal with abuse dished out by La Ram people (and I include there all those providing customer service)and now by this author's judgmental attacks.
o.k. Mr. Mustafa, here is what i think.
I think the problem is not that la Ram staff are treated like slaves, but most of the flight attendants, for example, are not proud to do their job (and yes it is their job to provide food/drink service to customers)and it shows. Even they complain amongst each other how much they hate their North American Moroccan customers. Perhaps it's these flight attendants that should treat us like paying customers and change their attitudes. We know you hate your jobs (except for shopping part in NY) ...but please don't treat us like you are doing us a favor, when you're just doing your job.
Unfortunately, they're too much in a rush to throw some food at us (within half an hour of take off), turn out the cabin lights, so they can sleep off their jet lag, or hang out and gossip in groups of three or more in the back of the plane!

RAM FORMER Passenger —
2010-09-25 06:38
Does RAM pay you to write this article? I have flown to Morocco countless times. I have flown with Air France, British Airways and RAM. RAM was by far the WORST airline ever. The plane was disgusting. It had duct tape holding the overhead compartment closed! The bathrooms I won't even comment on. The flight attendants are ALL rude with real bad attitudes. I will NEVER fly RAM again. I don't care what you say about the prices. They are BY FAR the worst and most expensive around. I will gladly pay more money to fly another airling.

OK, so how do you explain a 1hr delayed flight from London to Casa, resulting in a missed RAM connection Casa to Fez. 2 Stewards and stewardesses, including the manager confirmed that my connection would wait, which it didnt.
I was left stuck in Casa. Casa RAM staff told me that a bus would take me to Fez in 20 minutes. I waited 4 hours (I saw them 2 times during the 4 hours to which they responded another 20 minutes and half an hour, respectively). Finally after a fourth time of being told 20 minutes, I demanded my money back to make my own way, and I raised my voice and called them a pack of liars, to which a bus was arranged immediately. The problem was that a rather large RAM employee was sent to tell me about the bus and he used intimidation to try to extract 1000 Euros from me!!! This is highly unprofessional and CRIMINAL!!!! I refused to pay anything, and was shown to the bus anyway, arriving at Fez at 6.30 am, with the bus driver requesting another tip of 20 Dirham.
I was advised (or maybe subdued) by being told that I could claim a full refund for the flight on the website, however that remains to be proven (given their level of customer service, I doubt it will happen).
ROYAL AIR MAROC IS APATHETIC, UNPROFESSIONAL AND CRIMINAL.

Do not fly RAM —
2010-09-26 02:56
I have lived in the US for 12 years and used RAM services to CMN once in 2008. It was the worse experience flying overseas in terms of service, price and comfort; it's just disgusting airline. Of course, I had some bad experiences within the US especially with Delta but flying with RAM to CMN erased all te worse memories I had with Delta and establidshed itself as the worst airline in my opinion. I have 4 family members here in the US and we fly to Morocc every other year but never never ever with RAM. I'am ready to not fly to Morocco at all if the only airline were RAM; I owuld rather sail for a month!

I think your article is quiet balanced and sensible as to the R.A.M crew surely on the plane the service is faultless however on the ground it leaves a lot to be desired I am a travel agent myself in london and lived in america for few years my only disagerment with royal air maroc is they provide us with what they call sgit prices to tourists but not to moroccans and if we do we default our mutual agreament with the airline so why the tourists and not us and you know what a trip to morocco cost us probably 10 folds the cost for a tourist.......

Mr —

Your article is too far from the truth. But, you can be a good member with RAM PR.
If thing that what you are trying to tell is normal, let me tell you some facts and figures about what is abnormal. Within the last six months, many incidents happened to me and my family members when we flew via RAM.
1- On 01/2011, my sister came from Morocco to visit me in NY, her luggage was lost which is something that a person may say it is normal. What is not normal is that she received her luggage 8 days after she arrived. Before receiving the luggage she tried to call at least 20 times a day to check the status of it, she never got an answer or a reply to her voice mails until the day when they found the luggage.
2- On 03/2011, she was going back to Morocco (unfortunately via RAM). The flight was delayed, not 1 hour or 2 hours, but 18 hours. As always, RAM staff never communicate or inform any one of what is going on; what the status of the flight; is it going to be cancelled; or when passengers could expect their flight. All RAM staff left disappeared from the airport. Only some airport authorities told the passengers that the flight was posted until next day at 2:00 pm. Airport authorities also stated “RAM don’t want to talk to passengers. They just left us a message regarding the flight will be posted to next day at 2:00 pm.” What kind of image the RAM is trying to draw here? The worst part on this situation is when passengers find out that some on the passengers (US citizens, NOT naturalized citizens) were provided with accommodations such as food and lodging and the rest of the passengers were left abandoned at the airport. Long story short, my sister as well as many others slept at the airport floor.
Mr. Chtaini, if you are telling us on your article that “delays in departure, sitting in the tarmac for hours in the plane are problems confronting all airlines. Luggage being misplaced or arriving late or even lost happens on all airlines. Security and safety delays happen to all airlines. Flight cancellations happen on all airlines. These are not problems that apply to RAM alone.” I am going to tell you that other airlines treat their passengers with dignity and respect NOT like trash. I flew different airlines and I have never seen such ridiculous customer service.
The question is not about whether this problems happen on all airlines or not, the question is why other airlines act properly during any situations, they know how to react, solve the problems accordingly, communicate with passengers, apology for any inconvenience that may occurred during a flight.
3- On 04/2011, my cousin and his family of 4, flew from NY to Casablanca via RAM, again his luggage was lost. My question is: approximately, what is the estimated time that a person who lost his/her luggage should wait to get his baggage back? One day, two, five days, one week? My cousin waited for three weeks to get his luggage and RAM did not deliver the baggage to him to his address in FEZ (which is four hours driving from Casablanca = money). He had to go to Casablanca to get it. Mr. Chtaini, I am asking you to do another investigation and tell me what airlines or have you ever heard an airline did a trashy service like this.
4- On 07/2011, I went to Morocco via RAM and my flight supposed to leave JFK NY at 6:45. Do you know when the plane took-off? At 10:15 pm. Again my concern and complaints about the RAM is primarily about the lack of communication. The worst and the unforgettable thing in this situation is that no air conditioner was functioning in the middle part of the plane. I and other passengers who their seats were in that part of the plane were sweating. We tried to address the issue to one of flight attendant; do you know what the answer was? She said: “we know that the A/C is not working, but there is nothing we can do about it”. One of the passengers was an elderly man who had heart problem; he was sweating a lot and got dizziness. There was nobody that we could talk to; all flight attendants went to the back of the plane to hide from passengers who their concern and worry raised after three hours of sitting under deteriorated conditions (no A/C, no service, passengers walk to cabinets to serve themselves, no ice cubes, only hot water was served…etc). So, we ended up taking the elderly man to the first class to get some air. I have never seen or even heard about an airplane without A/C. We are in 2011, not in the 19 century. Now, motorcycles have fan. Again, Mr. Chtaini, I am asking you to re-investigate and tell me what airlines or have you ever heard of an airline with without A/C. I challenge you that you won’t find or even hear about one.
5- About the price, that is another outrage. In two years ago (summer 2009), I flew with IBERIA which I classify way better than RAM (there is not even a close comparison between the two). The price with RAM was US$ 1,200 and with IBERIA US$ 800. The duration of the flight with IBERIA was one hour more that RAM. I got to Casablanca at 8:00 am, when RAM arrived to at 7:00 am. I was very pleased with the flight. Honestly, the flight was perfect.
Bashing RAM will and should be a solution and a real one. RAM should take passengers’ complaints into consideration. These complaints could help management to review the customer service behavior and focus in areas where there is slack. I did not talk about feedback, because RAM does not care about passengers’ feedback. Other airlines appreciate passenger’s feedback, and sometime they even pay money in a variety of forms to get feedback. That’s how important the passengers’ opinion to these airlines. They need these opinions to correct or fix some of what is addressed by passengers.
When you write an article, consider all part of the issue.

As a Moroccan living in the UK, I can confirm that this airline is by far the worst I ever flown with. It's expensive and staffed with rude and unprofessional people, what else do you need to concoct a recipe for disaster!!! If the plane is delayed for some reason, no reason is given just shut up and wait. If you want to complain, well, you can write as many letters as you wish, no one would give a shit!! And if you are diabetic and the trolley is preventing you from going to the toilet, and tried to go to the so called business class one, well you may face stewardess ire and you may well get shouted at by business class passengers, as it happened to me. Some airlines are trying the best to blend in the Moroccan market, bringing tourists every day and prospective property buyers, and creating de facto jobs, but the RAM is preventing this from happening as few bastards controlling the monopole will lose out. And anyway, we Moroccans; we don’t like tourists really, as we always try to skin them everywhere they go so that we can make sure they go somewhere else in the future, why change ?!!!!!
