Why I Can’t Boycott Al Jazeera?

“I’m no longer a viewer of Al Jazeera for several reasons, one is that Al Jazeera is a lion with the Arabs and a lamb with Qatar.” replied a close friend of mine when I lately asked him whether he listened to the testimonies of Mohamed Ben Said Ait Idder on Shahedon Ala Al-Asr, one of Al Jazeera’s weekly programs presented by Ahmed Mansour.
I’m sorry to say that my friend, like many others, is a victim of many rumors the opponents of Al Jazeera have circulated so as to make it lose popularity. Arab governments, needless to say, are among those who feel threatened by Al Jazeera TV channel, and who have vainly turned to the weapon of rumors in order to tarnish its image around the Arab world.
The other rumors that my friend didn’t mention, and that surely led him to stop watching Al Jazeera are that Al Jazeera is a mouthpiece of Al Qaeda, and both the CIA and the Mossad are the real forces behind it.
They are rumors simply because no one has so far proved whether Al Jazeera is really pro-Ossama Ben Laden or a product of CIA and Mossad. But with regard to Al Jazeera’s blind eye to what’s happening in Qatar, I know many guests of Al Jazeera who did criticize live on-air both Qatar’s trade links with Israel and its military agreements with the United States.
I also told my friend that the Qatar-based Al Jazeera TV channel, albeit those rumors, is still the first channel the majority of Arabs rely on for news, documentaries and politically related programs. Many reasons lie behind that, one is that it that it reports without red-lines. In other words, it sheds light on issues the Arab governments do not want their citizens to know about. This is no doubt the reason why the office of Al Jazeera has been closed in many Arab countries, including Algeria and Tunisia.
1998 was the year I boycotted Moroccan TV channels (2M and RTM) and started watching regularly Al Jazeera. Without Al Jazeera, I would, for instance, have known next to nothing about many events that happened before and during the reign of king Hassan II, such as the “years of lead”, the military coups, Tazmamert, the victories of the Moroccan leader Mohamed Ben Abd el-Krim el-Khatabi, and the assassination of Al Mehdi Ben Barka. Also, Al Jazeera made me realize that my knowledge of Moroccan history is full of fabrications and fallacies.
I concluded the discussion with my friend saying that the weapon of rumors, among other weapons, has been directed against all those in the Arab world who refuse to toe the Arab governments’ line, but this weapon sometimes backfires. And Al Jazeera TV channel is a case in point!

You are right that Aljazeera is now the most popular TV news station in the middle east.

However, your friend is also right and you might not believe me, but you are terribly mistaken if you trust Aljazeera 100%, especially during war times, such as these times.

I was in Libya during the beginning of the libyan events, and I can tell you: over 95% of what ALjazeera and other western media claimed about what was happening there, was pure utter BS! Media propaganda taken to a whole new level!

Heck, they even broadcasted a completely fake video about my home region supposedly being bombed by Ghaddaffi live, while I was RIGHT THERE and nothing as such ever happened! Same thing happened with my friends in other regions.

Everytime they claim a region is being bombed by Ghaddaffi (especially in Tripoli) people get confused and go out in the streets checking the sky trying to spot anything! Confused the heck out of us, until Ghaddaffi came live on TV and told us it was media propaganda.

Truth is, Ghaddaffi NEVER bombed civilians. He only targeted terrorist armed rebels with guns and not air bombs as claimed on the media. And certainly, there were no mass civilians killed. Aljazeera broadcasted A LOT of not only fake testimonies, but videos as well. We were also able to spot a lot of hired actors who are NOT even Libyans (mostly Tunisians and Egyptians), on Aljazeera giving fake testimonies.

It was quite clear that there was a very cunning media propaganda worldwide and in the middle east, led by Aljazeera, to do whatever they can to gain worldwide support for taking this man down. Scary really!

The media also intentionally did not broadcast the videos they took when they were let in to shoot live and see that there was no sign for any air bombing. They ignored these reports and videos, but continued broadcasting the other biased and fake side of the story. The latest lie was the one showing the rebels taking over Tripoli. The green square was FAKE... the Ghaddaffi's house was also FAKE... it was another construction that mimiced it. Google and you will find info leaked about it being built in Qatar. Most libyans could tell the difference because we know the details of the hand statue, the green square and the house. But it was further proven when Ghaddaffi's intelligence revealed that it was built in Qatar and warned libyans of even more fake videos.

They did the same thing during the Iraq's war. Remember the video of Saddam's statue toppling? When they wanted to portray that they have taken over Baghdad that fast. The one that turned out to be fake, on record. Do a google and youtube search and you will find even US officials and reporters admitting it is fake. I remember back then we thought Saeed Alsahaf was a crazy liar for calling it all propaganda and BS. Well, turns out he was right.

Shitty world we live in!
