Morocco: The Challenge For The Islamists

Irvine, CA / Morocco Board News--         The Islamist Justice and Development party (PJD), which recently won the parliamentary election with 107 seats, is now struggling to form a majority in the parliament. The PJD has lost an additional 39 seats after the recent decision of the Socialist Union of Popular Forces (USFP) to join the opposition, formed by the Authenticity and Modernity (PAM) and The National Rally of Independents (RNI). Now the opposition has at least 138 seats combined, and it is expected to expand. The task of forming new coalitions has become cumbersome, especially now that the PJD is forced to secure 3 of 4 available parties to make up at least the 91 seats needed for a 51% majority.
