What do we really want? E-mail
VIEWPOINT - DRISS TEMSAMANI
Can any one argue that today's Morocco under M6 is way different than the Morocco of his late father?
Is it just me or we are really under a lot of reforms in Morocco and no one is noticing? Now, could it be that we are so traumatized that the speed of of implementation of these reforms is just not good enough? Could it be that we want to change Morocco over night so that we can wake up tomorrow and all the moral decay, corruption and ignorance not to mention a generation that suffers from lack of self confidence and fear... is no more?

Maybe what we want is a Socialist Morocco so that we can experiment with the promises of equality. Or better why don’t we elect a Khalifa so we can all benefit from free Zakat money and be entertained with public executions on Friday before we go back to work at 4pm after a 3 hour lunch . Now that's an idea!

I am still trying to understand the Moroccan state of mind... For sure we give-up too quick or maybe it is just that we like to debate over coffee and watch a good game while dreaming of good life across the ocean.. Maybe.

What do we really want? We want to party, drink and smoke yet we want to marry a virgin and oh; She better not show she knows you know what! We like to cheat in business yet hug during Eid and call each others Si and Lala. We want change and we want it now... Nothing is good and the the sky is always falling... Let's just leave this place and get the hell out.. Let it be the problem of the less fortunate who are stuck in the system... Who cares! What movie do you want to watch tonigh... I feel like sushi.

First, thank God this country has given us the power and freedom to express our thoughts fearlessly. However, this does not mean that we can pass on the same tools to our compatriots living in Morocco. People who have lived under oppression have no idea what freedom means, and any releaf can be explosive and chaotic. History has thought us that one person can never rule; it's at the end the mass that controls despite manipulations and distortion of facts. Let's be positive and educate our people about their fundamental rights, instead of criticising the monarchy. Reform needs people to change their attitudes and ultmately require sacrifices..

God bless,

what we really want ? I do not know. what do i want for Morocco? this i can say something about. For Morocco, i want to see all people involved in deciding about their destiny true full participation to free, transparent and democratic elections. This is not the case nowadays. decisions are still centralised in the hands of the monarchy (king and his surrounding group/s). The moroccan citizen is still considered as minor, there may be some true reasons for that when it comes to the security of the state but for minor decisions, i really do not see the population involved enough. A major part of moroccans are out of the process of building. The fear is absence of self confidence is still spread all over the moroccan youth. who dares to say to the king that he is wrong about a behavious or decision? i can suppose that he is acting according to his feelings and to the general informations reports.
you just hear people in cafés and bars talking about the injustice and unfair rulers' decisions but no one has the ability to rise his/her voice and say it loud.
people and the media supporting the change are still under control of the public authorities especially through abusive use of justice.

What we really want we don't dare asking for it, What we wantt is freedom of speech, freedom of religion, waht we want is the right to name our children with out checking with the system, the right to a good education, what we want is tax code that is fare to every moroccan citizen, What we want is opportunities to excel, to build an economy that creats jobs for our youth so we don't fish there bodies out of the sea. What we want we can achieve with hope, peace and patience.

i dont think that the new king has anything to do with the changes in morals, it's been happening for a long time, it's just now that we have access to internet and so many TV chanels via satelite that people want to imitate what western people are doing because they think that that's cool.

Being sincere is another thing. Your article is an intellectual argument. I enjoyed reading it. But frankly it has become like a song in the hit parade but the lyrics are not comprhensible.

Can you offer Mr. Tamsamani some clarification on what you call progress? When one says Morocco is better off today, Then which Morocco are we referring to.

We have lot of cleaning to do. It is not the responsibility only of a king or any leader but of all of us as people. The people we use to be under the prosperity of our ethics. We all need to recover our Moroccan consience to find our true identity in order to really prosper.

regards, Hamid

Mrs. Driss-Tamsamani is just another Moroccan citizen who has the right like anybody else to express his ideas, whether we agree with him or not. We all know what's going on in our country, but our perspective vis a vis reform varies, based on how much we know and how much we think need to be done. We can talk all day, but we do nothing. Most of us have done well here, can we send some money ; create charity establishments to help needy people, widows, homeless, children on the street..etc. that's what needs to be addressed. Tackling issues that concern our nation is a positive thing, but in parallel, let's help financially; don't step back when it comes to money..

God bless us all
