Moroccan Movie "Casanegra", A True Gem
HASSAN MASIKY

tweeter rss

The story line of the movie is a realistic portray of the life of several young Moroccans living on the margins of society, not by choice but as a result of circumstances outside of their control. The two main movie characters, Adil and Karim, gave an outstanding performance depicting the aspirations, letdowns and hopes of a generation of young Moroccans on the verge of despair and hopelessness.
Casangera treats a variety of controversial social issues that are part of Moroccan daily life, still never honestly and openly discussed in conventional forums. From alcoholism and drug use to domestic violence and social exploitation, Nour-Eddine did not shy away from addressing social illnesses in an artistic and cinematographically savvy manner.
The movie contains few raw and "hot" scenes that capture a parallel "Casawi" society where rich and poor play different roles but as equally important. This movie gives a voice to the voiceless "Casawis" that are poor and disadvantaged but no less ambitious and smart than the bourgeois of Ain Diab. Packed in two hours of beutifull cinema and artistically packaged, Casanegra showcases the Moroccan spirit with its genius and pessimism. Nevertheless, the issues of materialism and social hypocrisy in today' Morocco were the dominant issues addressed in the movie. Money has become the primary mover and the focus of a society that until recently was austere and humble.
Classism was the underlying subject of Casanegra. Moroccan society has always been feudal, and it is evident that in spite of western influence, feudalism in a modern form is alive and well in Morocco. "La hogra" is a disease that is eating away at the fabric of the Moroccan society. Omni Present in the daily dealing between Moroccans at very level and hierarchy of the society, Moroccans like to classify and "size up" who they are dealing with: Where one Moroccan stands in relation to the other. Several of Casanegra's messages are subtle and far reaching in meaning. Casanegra is not recommended for children and contains scenes that may offend some viewers.
Moroccan Cinema should be proud of the Casanegra's artistic crew for a crafty work.  Bravo Nour-Eddine Lakhmari.

This movie portrays daily "kazawi" lives, we all have to see beyond that whole "Respect" thing (I mean bad language) and just say it like it is. Moroccans are ambitious but could have that ambition exploited and turned against them. I am proud of this movie as it brings so many things to the table that other Moroccan movies simply fail to do
